Windows 7 Failure

There are a lot of download links for dx8vb.dll around the web – google finds most of them.

Though I would check to see if the file exists on your system before downloading.

This is the final message line in the log file:

Error #: -2147221503 Error Description: Unable to Configure DirectX. Please ensure that the most recent version of DirectX is installed, and that your graphics card drivers are up to date. Error Location: modMain.Main

This is the error message I get trying to start:
3DCP-Pro Version 6.xxx
3DCP-Pro Version 7.xxx
3DCP-Pro Version 8.xxx

I have re-installed versions 6 and 7 many times each time manually cleaning the registry.

This is a Dell laptop and the is no 3rd party driver support or updates by Dell or ATI.

And dxdiag reports version 11 running A-OK.

Incidentally, I have these programs running fine on a Windows 7 desktop.

I will await on how I might repair this situation.

Hi Hank,

Do you have the dx8vb.dll registered in the system32 folder?

I searched some other run-time errors discussed here and found playing with the UAC on Vista/Win7 had some impact.

It seems some opinions say you must have the UAC turned on to get 3DC to initiate.

Well, on the laptop system mentioned in this thread, one running Windows 7, when I turn the UAC completely OFF and reboot, the various versions of 3DC initiate and run. I’ve run through the cycle several times:

UAC ON-does not run
UAC off-does run.

My desktop running Windows 7 has the UAC set to the default (second highest level) 3DC runs fine.

Reasons for all this go beyond my tech experience. I would really like to run the UAC default level.

There must be someone around here with more experience who might help me with this.

Regards,
Hank

From Paul’s ShapeViewer page referenced above:
[BLOCKQUOTE class=’ip-ubbcode-quote’][div class=’ip-ubbcode-quote-title’]quote:[/div][div class=’ip-ubbcode-quote-content’]To run Shape Viewer under Vista, you may need to copy dx8vb.dll and picformat32.ocx from your Windows XP WindowsSystem32 folder to your Vista WindowsSystem32 folder. If you can’t find them, click here to download a 484k ZIP file (instructions in ‘Comments’). This latest version of Shape Viewer installs these .DLLs as part of the setup process. [/div][/BLOCKQUOTE]
Ignore the fact it refers to Vista….Windows 7 is essentially Vistav2

Hi Doug,
Would it be possible for you to post a direct link to this 484k download…or the site with the link. I am having a problem getting 3DC to install and need all the help I can get. thanks.

The above link doesn’t work…for me.

I’m trying to install 3DC on a windows 7 machine and it ain’t working. <!– s:( –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!– s:( –>
It is strange that I seem to be the only one having this problem at the moment.

I have UAC turned off…and hope to keep it that way. <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

Hi Otterbear

The steam4me site is down at the moment…and when it returns, it’ll probably be a different url…which is why you’re having difficulty getting hold of the file.

I’m not sure if the download link was elsewhere or not. Paul will need to answer that…I’ll try and bring this thread to his attention.
