very slow unloading of 3DC

Finally I got around to testing this and obviously it’s connected with the count of layers. andnbsp;If I unload the same model (about 10000 triangles) without ‘compact all’ it needs about 5 min and 20 sec to close 3DC completely. After andnbsp;andquot;compact allandquot; the same model unloads in 45 sec. I’m not quite happy with these results because I like to work with layers but I have to decide now what’s more important to me. Especially in the final stages of development I have to load and unload models quite often for testing in MSTS, naturally the poly-count is high and the layers are many. Would it be possible (or is it possible?) to add a function to compact only part of the layers? Then I could compact up to that level of layers I’m sure of never needing again, but keep those I might need sometimes again.

Is it only my computer or does anybody out there have similar troubles? It takes simply ages (5 to 7 min) for 3DC to unload itself from the memory, esp. when it has used more than 200MB of RAM with a little bit more complex models. If I monitor the process I can see that at first there are quite little bits of memory unloaded very slowly until a margin of about 190 MB then the process becomes faster and faster the last 100 MB vanish in seconds.
BTW I’ve got 6.04 and it’s still clearly much slower in responding than 5.7 on average.

Yep. I dont know how to monitor it, but when I’m done working on a model, usually a more detailed one, I click on the close button, and it takes awhile to actually unload and close. I think the longest it has been was about a minute or so. ( My models are complex for me, but probably not as complex as something you would be building so yours might take even longer to close)

Hannes — Are you running into virtual memory / swap files for memory?

Cal.

I always create a new scene before closing.Helps a lot.

The last model that set a new record with more than 7 minutes had about 8000 triangles. Not so very much I think.
In the meantime I found out that I can crash 3DC deliberately most of the times during unloading by pressing the close window-x in the upper right corner. That’s a lot faster than waiting for the unloading process. I hope I don’t do anything wrong with crashing causing other difficulties.

Whats the triangle count?

I always close using the close andquot;Xandquot; in the upper right corner, 3DC doesnt crash, just takes awhile to actually close. its not such a big deal, but it is something I’ve noticed. I thought it was just the size of the models.

@blaydrnnnr
I assume it’s not the correct way to close 3DC because when I start it again after closing with the X, it always tells me that I didn’t shut down 3DC properly and asks if I want to restore my crashed project Otherwise I’ve had no troubles so far.

@calvin

Not exactly sure what you mean. I’ve got 900something MB RAM and use cacheman as RAM-manager. I don’t think that virtual memory would be much involved.

@harold
I tried this too, but it’s very similar to closing down. It takes ages to unload the first model. I can’t say if there is a difference in time needed I did never compare the two modes.

Hannes44,

A few things to try to determine the cause.

Test 1

1) run 3DC
2) Open a complex model.
3) Close 3DC (via the X) and keep track of the time required to close.

Test 2

1) run 3DC
2) Open a complex model.
3) Save as another file name
4) Do a andquot;Compact Allandquot;
5) Save
6) Close 3DC
7) run 3DC
8) Open the andquot;compactedandquot; model
9) Close 3DC (via the X) and keep track of the time required to close.

Richard

Thanks, that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.

Try using the compact icon under the object layers window – I think this is what you are after – compacts from the layer you are on andquot;downandquot; ?
