UV Mapping Issues

hi, i have sussed out why it is doing this but still think it is wrong, seems it behaves this way when it is a different object even though it is a child of the main object.

although i have sussed this part i get a different problem just like the first poster, each time i save new unwrap the previous fades a bit and after the third or fourth unwrap the first has faded completely out,

how can some people use this and i cant, i have checked the options and cant find anything that may cause this

cheers

Having problems with the UV UnWrap. I tried to create some textures for my model and it is going bezerk on me. So I went through the tutorial in ther help section on unwrapping and texturing the simpe cylinder.

What is happening is this: I unwrap a section and adjust accordingly. Hit ok and the bitmap is created. I do the next section, and all is fine. When I do the third section, the first section dissapears but the second is there. A fourth section is unwrapped, and the first and second sections are gone with the third visisble. It goes on like this for the whole cylinder. I get the same results with my models. Am I missing something?

I did this tutorial many times and get the same results. I am following the tutorial exactly as written.

I am using version 7.0.2.2

Also, what happened to the rotation option? I rather plug in the numbers instead of using the on screen controls

Are you saving the bitmap as you unwrap each section?

Bazza

Bazza,

Yes and No, I tried it both ways and the problem is the same.

I just unwrapped the sides of a cylinder to test it.(not very well, just a quick test) see attached pic.

1) Select the first section of faces
2) Click the unwrap operation
3) Re-size and position as required
4) Click ok and save the bitmap
5) Continue selecting some of the faces and clicking the unwrap operation.
6) Keep re-sizing and positionng each group of faces and click ok when your happy with the layout.
7) Continue working your way around the cylinder as above.

The rotation buttons are just above the Cancel button.

Nope still does not work as you directed. Here’s what’s happening. I follow your steps above, just like the tutorials, but after step 6, the program creates a bitmap only for the section of faces that was just selected/adjusted and overwrites the origianl bitmap file with only that selection. So the unwrap I made prior to the one just made, does not exist anymore. Forget about using already made textures, the program goes absolutely bezerk.

I did this process 100 times with prior versions of 3dc, but this problem arose with ver 7. That is why I went back to the tutorial; I tried to confirm that it is not me.

This is really starting to erk me because I am dead in the water at this point. I have to unwrap for texturing, and so I cannot proceed any further with my projects. I am actually at the point were I will have to resort to learning and using 3ds max to finish up.

Also, oddly, I uninstalled 3dc 7 and loaded up 6.5 Pro. Half the features now do not work and the unwrap funtion button does not even exist. what the heck is going on? The future looks bleak for 3dc and me unless I am totally forgetting something and am to blame.

And so far, you are the only one that is trying to help me, so thanks.

Ok, maybe Richard could offer some advice here.
If it were me I would try uninstalling all versions of 3DC and try a re-install.
Maybe the Registry needs editing in some way but you really need Richards advice on that subject.

If we can get this sorted I’m sure you’ll enjoy using 3DC more than Max, Lightwave, Maya etc, especially if you are into railroad stuff. Paul’s plugins ain’t available for Max users. <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

I have Lightwave and Maya installed but still use 3DC for 95% of my projects, it’s just so easy to use.

I don’t use the 3DC unwrapper that much, although I used to.
I now use Ultimate Unwrap 3D for 90% of my unwraping needs. You can unwrap a cylinder in about 20 seconds with just a click of a button.

However this method does have it’s problems. I have to export whatever I want to unwrap from 3DC, load it into UU3D then export it from UU3D and import it back into 3DC.
But it’s worth it just for the unwraping features of UU3D.

Prior to it becoming a commercial product it was called LithUnwrap I think, it was free but not sure if it’s still available. Also it wasn’t a 3D unwrapper.

Have you changed anything on your system lately?
Are you using Windows XP or Vista?

Anyway I hope you stick with 3DC for a while, I’m sure this issue can be resolved, we just need a bit more input..Richard?, Anybody??

Thanks for the tip on UU3D, I might have to try it. Sounds like the export/import steps may be worth the time saved unwrapping.

Nothing was changed at all on my comp. I have uninstalled all 3dc versions, and even downloaded the files/installed again and the problem still repeats. Wrote Rich an email as he might be the only one with a solution.

Except for some time away from modeling, I have been using 3dc since 2001 and had no problems with it and produced some great models for MSTS. I guess this is why I am really getting upset, because in six+ years, i never had my projects come to a screeching halt.

I had no problems with this myself, but I did see how problems could occur.

When creating/updating the unwrap bitmap 3DC has to open a small window that it renders the bitmap to. If this window doesn’t open, or 3DC is minimized, or the user clicks behind the window onto 3DC, then the bitmap will be wrong.

Does a window open with a title of ‘Creating Unwrap Bitmap’ each and every time you click ‘OK’ on the unwrap operation?

Another possible cause is if you click behind the Unwrap operation and then do another Unwrap. This shouldn’t be possible, but it is unfortunately. I’m not exactly sure what happens when this is done.

Been away for a bit, but still having the same problems with the UV. Let’s use the cylinder example again.

I follow the tutorial exaclty. Select faces (4) and select uwrap. All goes well and the bitmap is created -fine. I then go and select four more faces and hit the unwrap again. The first unwrap is shown along with the new one for the new four faces. I hit OK and for the split second you see the saved bitmap, it only shows the last unwap – hence it OVERWITES the last bitmap with only the new one – so I cannot add keep adding to the texture.

And yes the ‘Creating Unwrap Bitmap’ does appear when I hit OK. I am not clicking on the background or any other hijinks.

The issue is the program is only saving the latest UV unwrap and overwriting the last saved bitmap file.

As this appears to be only happeneing to me, I guess there is something wrong with my computer – which I have everything up to date. Again, the UV unwrap has worked for me, on the current machine, with the last few versions of 3DC. I would uninstall v7 go back to v6, but I lost the key codes.

I invested too much time in my projects not to have them textured, so I am close to just scrapping all – I am currently that frustrated

Can’t help with the unwrapping issue as it works correctly here for me also, but you should be able to find your key codes for 6 if you ‘go’ to your ‘personal zone’ and then ‘profile’ and then ‘view/edit complete profile’ (all here on the forum) – your code should be in there and if that fails I am sure Richard would send you a copy if you email him.

hi, i am getting a similar problem to this with 3DC 7.1.2.0, each time i map a piece of my model the last map fades, then once i have saved 3 or 4 maps the first has disappeared, has a solution ever been found for this, i have searched the forum and this is the closest i can find but no solution

cheers

hi, have taken some screenshots to show what is happening;

this is using 3DC 8 but i did also have the same problem with 3DC 7, i just didn’t use the function but feel it will be essential to unwrap here to keep the textures in proportion,

i have been creating a signal box and have began unwrapping the windows, here the first window is mapped to the texture

[img:1qxyz437]http&#58;//i483&#46;photobucket&#46;com/albums/rr195/GavNormandale/Unwrap1&#46;jpg[/img:1qxyz437]

Now the second window

[img:1qxyz437]http&#58;//i483&#46;photobucket&#46;com/albums/rr195/GavNormandale/Unwrap2&#46;jpg[/img:1qxyz437]

Now the third window, notice there is no sign of the second unwrap in the texture

[img:1qxyz437]http&#58;//i483&#46;photobucket&#46;com/albums/rr195/GavNormandale/Unwrap3&#46;jpg[/img:1qxyz437]

Now the fourth, again no sign of second or third unwraps

[img:1qxyz437]http&#58;//i483&#46;photobucket&#46;com/albums/rr195/GavNormandale/Unwrap4&#46;jpg[/img:1qxyz437]

This is how the texture now looks in Paint Shop Pro only the first and last unwraps are visible

[img:1qxyz437]http&#58;//i483&#46;photobucket&#46;com/albums/rr195/GavNormandale/UnwrapTexture&#46;jpg[/img:1qxyz437]

Now the next window is unwrapped no sign of any of the textures bar the first

[img:1qxyz437]http&#58;//i483&#46;photobucket&#46;com/albums/rr195/GavNormandale/Unwrap5&#46;jpg[/img:1qxyz437]

And the texture after that Unwrap operation

[img:1qxyz437]http&#58;//i483&#46;photobucket&#46;com/albums/rr195/GavNormandale/UnwrapTexture2&#46;jpg[/img:1qxyz437]

anyone know why this is happening

cheers
