Using Parts Libraries

It seems that when working with TRAIN models, you are likely to need ‘standard’ parts when making models. This seems to be more true than maybe other modeling projects.

I’ve adopted procedure for my own model building that has me save an item as a 3DO (object) file if there is even a remote change I’ll need it again.

This means I have hundreds of objects at my disposal, some that date all the way back to version 5.5.

Obviously, I’ve not converted all of them so sometimes I insert a much OLDER .3DO file into a newer parts library I’m working with. This seems to have introduced a problem. When importing OLD .3do files, there seems to be a good chance that it will import into your library and even your current project ‘UNTIL’ you attempt to retrieve the object’s ‘PROPERTIES’… At that point, 3DC will, without delay, fatally crash version 6.5.05.

I’ve encountered this on multiple projects and multiple parts and in each instance, I’ve been able to ‘fix’ the faulty .3do part by ‘recovering’ the project and then EXPORTING the faulty part as a .X format file. The faulty part is then deleted from the project and and imported back in again from the .X format. This fixes the ‘properties’ crash and it can now be saved as an updated .3do with no apparent issues after that.

Hope this helps someone…
