Two Shapes – parallel alignment ?

BTW: that’s how I do it with edges… I don’t even think about it anymore…

Though… on a complex model… that method starts to get kind of sluggish since there is so much for the program to ‘wade’ through to find your ‘points’.

All,

I have two shapes with parallel ‘edges’. Is there any easy way to perfectly line these edges up so they overlap making the two objects seem as one ? If these ‘edges’ belonged to the same object I would normally ‘weld’ them together. For texture and alignment issues I really need to keep them as two distinctive shapes so bonding the two shapes together to form one object is not an option.

As always – appreciate any help I can get.

Regards,
Scott

Butt Objects? Is that available to you?

From the Plug-ins List:

Butt Objects

Precisely butts two objects together.

Hi Pete,

OBTW: Just upgraded to 7.X today…

I have ‘Butt Objects’ however I was looking for a little more precision. ‘Butt’ only seems to work with whole objects. I am trying to move just one edge.

Specifically – steam locomotives – the cylinders. For animation and texture purposes I can’t make the cylinders all one object. If you look at a picture of a steam locomotive – the cylinders are kind of encased in a box. I have no idea what it is actually called. I need that box to perfectly match the edges on the cylinders so I don’t have texture bleed through or any visible edges.

If I merge the two shapes I can easily select two ‘edges’ then weld the ‘edges’ together.

What are my options to perform the same or similar type of action on two distinctive shapes ?

Thanks,
Scott

Would it work to select the end points of one edge and move each one to the xyz location of its corresponding point on the other edge?

Hi Dick,

Thanks for the response – hmm – that would probably work – I’ll give it a shot… It just seemed a bit tedious transposing all the cooordinates…

I’ll let you know how I make out…

Already posted at train-sim – but – here’s my project…
