Texturing with Targa and PNG.

You would need to use an image editor of some sort to modify the texture.

Richard

Hi all,

Just playing around with the targa and png files
Thing is I’m a bit confused. For starters, if I was creating trees I would make/create a tree in PaintShop Pro, the rest of the picture is then painted black. Save this ( now this is where I get a bit confused ) as a targa or png file and place this texture onto a face and when rendered the black is invisable and the tree looks great! <!– s:D –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!– s:D –>

A few things I need help in understanding:

1. Whats the differance in the Targa files and
the PNG files. <!– s:? –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_confused.gif" alt=":?" title="Confused" /><!– s:? –>
2. How come most other apps use WHITE
background instead of black. Or am I not
going about this the wrong
way <!– s:? –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_confused.gif" alt=":?" title="Confused" /><!– s:? –>
3. And finaly <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –> If I was to make smoke,
which made up of different whites and greys
to be visable when you must raise the
translucency for thiseffect to
work <!– s:? –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_confused.gif" alt=":?" title="Confused" /><!– s:? –>

Any help on theese Q’s

Thanks

James

1. I think they are pretty similar. I am not sure if Targa has compression or not. PNG does.

2. It seems that nobody can make up their mind on this one.

3. You can change the alpha layer in the texture itself to change the amount of translucency.

Richard

Thanks for the reply Richard <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

1. and 2. are understud now, but number 3. how do you change the alpha layer in the texture itself to change the amount of translucency?
