Then it is most likely that they are using different material attributes (settings in the material palette). Or it could still be a creasing issue.

I have andquot;goldandquot; version of 3DC 5.0 Pro running on my computer running Windows XP. My computer has GeForce 3 video card. I created some new track sections and applied textures to them. The sides of the rails on the track sections that I created are lighter than the sides of the rails on the track sections that came with MSTS. I think that I didn’t have this problem in 3DC 4.5 Pro and earlier.

You could try applying a crease operation to them. It may make a difference. Or it could be the setting of the material that was applied.
