Swapping textures in Animation

Yes! This is great. You see this all the time on subway trains.

I’ve created a train with opening sliding doors. I want to also indicate the light that comes on when doors are open. I tried swapping the texture for the light whilst in animation (naming the texture the same as the animated parts). It works when previewing in 3DC but not in MSTS.

Any ideas or does this not work?

why not leave the light on always? Then when the door opens the light will shine out, when closed, well you get the idea. Hope this helps.

Piece of cake guys – Animate the needed textured object to face outward when the door’s open, and inward when the door’s closed. ;D

I tried a similar texture-animation with a signal once but it didn’t work obviously. But I found a solution for my signal. I put a frame painted with specular 0 red light texture slightly behind the dark lamp holder. now I animated the frame and put it slightly in front of the lamp-holder, then back again….. hope you get the drift. It works quite well with this blinking signal maybe you could use this technique, too. Link the moving of the lighted frame with the opening and closing doors. Good luck!

Hehe, sorry I thought you meant like a refigerator! I was wondering if that was protypical but then who am I to judge?

You could do this in 3DC, but there is no way you could export this to MSTS. The S file format doesn’t support this type of animation.

But, perhaps there is some other way to do it using MSTS lights. This really isn’t my area of expertese though.

Sorry, re-reading my post I can see I didn’t explain my problem very well.

The train I am making has a small indicator light on the outside of each coach that comes on when the doors are open and goes off when they close. That way the guard can look down the train and see if any doors fail to close.

I remember once, on an earlier version of 3DC I forgot to switch off animation and applied some textures. When I played the animation the textures swapped. Now I want it to happen I can’t get it to work.

Ah but Henry, like the sound of a tree falling in the forest, can you be really sure the light isn’t still on in the fridge, even with the door closed! andnbsp;:D

Thanks for the suggestions, one and all. I think I can do it using your ideas.
