streetlamp light

Sorry, I really don’t know what Kuju means. I know that there are andquot;sub-objectsandquot; in the andquot;sandquot; file, but whether this is what they mean or not is anyone’s guess. There is also a sub-object hierarchy in the file. So… andnbsp;???

Richard

How do I make the light cone of a street-lamp? I tried using the light.ace texture used by Kuju with US2lamp1. Concluding from the *.sd file they use no night texture. I tried specularity 0 but naturally some parts of the cone (top, where transparency-map is completely white) are visible at daylight and strangely only the same parts are visible in the dark as light cone. All the shades of translucency down to the floor are not visible. Is there a special trick how the people at Kuju did it?

Just as with USspotlight which glows its yellow image for 24 hrs. andnbsp; Not too annoying in daylight since it only andquot;illuninatesandquot; the ground but doesn’t put out the andquot;coneandquot; effect as the streetlight does. andnbsp;Wish I new the trick also. andnbsp;would love to use it for station platform lighting only. andnbsp; When you lower the spotlight to bring the height down you lose the illumination effect since it now also goes underground. andnbsp;Keep me posted with any success you may have.

Thanks for the links. I now get an acceptable version of streetlamps but they shine day and night. I don’t seem to get the sub-object thing right with 3DC. Are these sub-objects children of a group or are they something completely different?

We had a discussion about this on the uktrainsim forums a few weeks ago – it seems kuju use sub-objects.
I’m not sure about what situations 3DC uses to create sub-objects in the S file, but I know it does do it sometimes.

here are the links to the discussion and the MSN information mentioned there:

Thanks for the reply. andnbsp;I did read the UK threads and they are interesting . andnbsp; I don’t understand the parent-child thing either. andnbsp;I guess that makes me an orphan. andnbsp;Better go back and read the tutorials I guess.
Joe C. andnbsp; Keep me posted if you find out anything new!

I understand the parent-child relationship (at least andnbsp;I think so). I don’t know for sure if this corresponds with the sub-object nomenklatura of Microsoft/Kuju. I tried several permutations of parent-child and defined a sub-object in the *.sd file but nothing worked so far. Maybe Richard could shed some light on the question of correspondency.

Joe, it’s the same with streetlights. If you lower US2lamp1 you loose the light effect on the floor because it goes underground. There is no light cone illuminating the landscape available for scenery objects with the one exception of building a scenery object as a car and making a *.wag file (mentioned in one of the threads in the posting above). I tried this some time ago and it worked but if you plant more than one lamp it plays havoc with frame rates. For now I’ve built a lamp the conventional way with a simple empty translucent texture for day and a light texture for the night folder and the 256 number in the *.sd file. It works just like US2lamp1, no problem there and I can use orange lighting and so on. What I still would like to know is how this sub-object thingy works with 3DC. Parent-Child???
