SDS Problem – 3DC 6.0 rev 4

Yes, it is definitely a bug. I don’t quite know the cause yet, but your sample definitely shows the problem.

As a work around, you can apply the andquot;Smoothandquot; operation with the same parameters as your andquot;smoothingandquot; parameters to achieve the same effect as a andquot;commitandquot;. But be sure to turn off smoothing for the object before apply the smooth operation.

Hi all,

I have problems with SDS models. Modeling goes
OK, for example I can set model’s Smoothing
Level to 3. Then I model something, this is not
problem with one model, I get this every time.
When I’m happy with model, I would like to
Commit the smoothing in Object Properties.
But when I push Commit button, the model
is finally smoothed (at least progress bar
goes to end and wireframe is shown where
smoothing is done…) but for some reason
the operation does not end! It never finishes
the operation, control never returns and dialogs
are not redrawn.

Question: I have only Athlon 600 MHz, 256 MB
memory and Windows 98SE. Is 3DC too
heavy for this configuration? Or is there something
else I should know?

It does that to me too every once in a while…1ghz Win98 system with 128MB RAM here.

I get around it by exporting to OBJ and then re-importing into a new scene.

I haven’t experienced this myself. Do you have a sample that shows this? If so can you send it to me? (<!– e –>support@amabilis.com<!– e –>)

Richard

Richard,

I sent one model which causes 3DC
to hang in Commit to <!– e –>support@amabilis.com<!– e –> .

I really hope it helps in solving the problem.

…And I hope the problem is not my poor
old system… because I have no hope to
upgrade now.

Oh my god, Mel, you’re right:

it EXPORTS subdivided model OK,
even when it can’t show it by itself!

I think we have really found a bug.
I can even render the subdivided
model as an .obj with other apps.

Thanks a lot for sharing this tip,
and I hope you can continue your
modeling also, you sounded quite
annoyed in Model Feedback…

Good luck,
Markku Myllymaki

Richard,

the workaround works for me!

However, if I want to set smoothing level
before smoothing, how do I set parameters
first? I mean, I can now set the smoothing
level after it has done it once, but I fear
that if I have hi-poly model and the level
is set to 3, my poor machine won’t be
able to handle the polygon amount. In
other programs the sensible amount
seems to be around 80 000 quads…
