Radeon 9700 pro – Help!

I’ve been following this thread, but I’m not sure what should be added to the FAQ. Can you explain?

Richard

I displaced my old GF2 MX 400 with Hercules 3D Prophet 9700 Pro; latest drivers (from Hercules, 6.14.1.6292, 01/20/2003) installed.

And now I cannot use 3DC any more. It’s not possible to place any object. I allways get this display driver error #2147417848. :-[

Screen: 1024x768x32.

Please, can anybody tell me if there is a driver for Radeon 9700 (pro) that works with 3DC? Or if this is a config thing?

Had it been a long time between uses of 3DC? i.e. are you sure 3DC worked before you changed video cards?

Richard

Desktop color deepth is 32 bit (1024x768x32).

Report:

Step 1:
Installed DX9a -] 3D Hal is available now, objects can be dropped, but only in RGB Emulation mode. Textures keep being translucent. Using textures still causes 3DC to slowly freeze.

Step 2:
Deinstalled Hercules driver. Installed ATI CATALYST RADEON 3.2 (7.84) -] no changes.

Step 3:
Played around with display driver settings. No changes.

Conclusion:
This indicates that I have to correct myself and apologize. It now in deed appears to be a DX9 related problem in combination with that (specific?) video card, cause there where no probs with GF2 plus DX9. Well now, the new card supports DX9 features compared to GF2. But what confuses me is, that 3DC surely does not use DX9 features….

But who really knows how Microsoft interferes in special cases? <!– s;-) –><!– s;-) –>

Anyway, it seems like I’ll have to wait and see if future versions of DX9 will fix my problem or if you will be able to find a solution for this thing – if you’ll find the time and possibilites to investigate this.

Though, MS should work on their 3D system too, damn sure!

One positive result is left to mention here. With the ATI Catalyst driver that video card turns out to work faster. So I finally did not waste time. ;D

I thank you for your quick answers and your effort, anyway. Your support is excellent!

….. looking forward to be able to use 3DC again some day.

Hi Richard,

I happened to have this problem with one elder nVidia driver in the past. But that’s not the point. I actually used 3DC the day before I changed my video card, and it worked very well. andnbsp;

I completely uninstalled the old card’s driver, then removed the old card, then put the new card inside, then installed the driver that came with the new card. Then I got a the latest version from hercules.com (7.83 (Catalyst 3.1) from [img:2gxs2cns]http://us.hercules.com/support/link_drivers.php3?prodid=40andamp;c=0andamp;p=14),[/img:2gxs2cns]
<!– m –>http://us.hercules.com/support/link_dri … ndamp;p=14<!– m –>),
uninstalled the previousley installed version and installed that current one to see, if this would solve my problem. It didn’t.

For information. This is definately not due to DX9. I have DX9 allready installed since 02/26/03. No problems with this so far.

I will try the following this day:
The current Catalyst driver directly from ATI.
The latest update for DX9.

I will let you know if one or both of this in combination would solve it.

If you have any suggestion, please let me know!!

My current system:
AMD Athlon XP at 1,45G
VIA chipset for both north- and southbridge (via4in1 v5.2.0.3440, date 10/02/02)
OS: WinXP Home 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600
Hercules 3D Prophet 9700 Pro; driver v6.14.1.6292, date 01/20/03 from Hercules
768 MB RAM
1,83G V-RAM

Do you need more system information?

Would it make sense to un- and then reinstall 3DC?

BTW: I expanded my memory along with this new video card. Would that matter somehow?

Suggestion: It may be that 3DC is a bit too sensible in respect of the video driver. I would like to know what missing driver feature or bug brings up this error, and if it would be possible to fix this in 3DC somehow some day.

Anyway, I really would like to have my favourit 3D software working again. andnbsp;;)

Thanks for your effort!

Oooooops!

Forget about that translucency thing! The texture translucency was set to 90%! I overlooked that!

So, everything I said above is true except of that textures does NOT become translucent!

Please, forgive me. I better should go for new and stronger glasses!! andnbsp;::)

So this error only occurs when you drop a new object onto a scene? Can you load existing files?

Richard

Yes, I can load existing files. I can play around with the existing objects. But , I did not check every function.

If I try to drop a new object the error occures.

I recognized a few more things:

1) 3DC is very slow now, which surprises me because of more ram an a much faster video card.

2) 3DC gets slower more and more during ‘work’ until it freezes completely (only 3DC, not the system itself).

3) If I change an object’s texture, the object becomes translucent. Regardless of the option settings.

4) I can only select andquot;RGB Emulationandquot;. 3D Hall is not listed at all.

Something else I should check?

I’ll now try the other driver I mentioned above. I’ll be back after about one hour.

You might want to check that your desktop color depth is 16 bit or higher.

Richard

The next thing to try is:

1) Uninstall 3DC

2) Delete the andquot;3DCandquot; and/or andquot;Amabilisandquot; folder from andquot;c:program filesandquot; (or wherever you installed to)

3) re-install 3DC.

4) Delete this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareVB and VBA Program Settings3DC

Richard

Hi Richard!

It works!! I’m so happy!! <!– s:D –><!– s:D –>

What did I do?

1) Uninstalled LPProUpdate and then 3DC.

2) Deleted 3DC directory on the harddisk.

3) Cleaned the Registry using RegCleaner 4.3 ….

(Seems like a lot of entries from my old video card were deleted too in this process!)

4) … and removed some by hand; i.e. such like:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareVB And VBA Program SettingsExtrudeSettings]
andquot;OptionsExtrudeLeftandquot;=andquot;450andquot;
andquot;OptionsExtrudeTopandquot;=andquot;4905andquot;
andquot;FaceExtrudeAmountandquot;=andquot;0andquot;
andquot;FaceBevelAmountandquot;=andquot;0,1andquot;
andquot;FaceRegionandquot;=andquot;0andquot;

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareVB And VBA Program SettingsExtrude]

5) Made sure to have the reg entry removed you told me.

6) Restarted the computer.

7) Installed 3DC, started it. Compatibility tests completed successfully.

<!– s8-) –><!– s8-) –> Did a fist try. Works!

9) Entered registration data.

10) Downloaded LPProUpdate again.

11) Quit 3DC.

12) Installed LPProUpdate.

13) Started 3DC.

Bingo!! ;D

Thanks for backing me up so keen! Please, let me know if you need more detailed information.

Hi Alex!

Please, read my previous posting. Maybe you would like to try this procedure too. To me now this appears to be neither an ATI driver nor an 3DC related problem, but due to old and obsolete Registry entries and thus program settings.

For me 3DC works now. And hey, it runs damn fast! andnbsp;;D

… so far. andnbsp;;)

Alex,

I downloaded Nendo Demo and installed it. I ran three of the tutorials coming with it (bay_truck, mr_happy, stairs) without any error message or crash. Currently installed display driver is ATI Catalyst Radeon 3.2 (7.84) for WinXP.

This surprises me somehow, since ATI’s Catalyst drivers are rather the same for any Windows version, except of some OS related conformances (like with nVidias Detonator drivers too). Maybe you might want to report this annoying driver difference to ATI to give them a chance to solve it.

One suggestion left from me. Did you check if you might need more current chipset drivers and/or BIOS update for your MB? Or did you change some video related BIOS settings which might interfere with your 9100 now? Sometimes the ‘beast’ is lurking in the dark.

Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Hi Alex,

of course I will try Nendo for you. To help each other is what we are here for.

I will report the test result here as soon as possible.

To Richard!

I did some more in deep testing today by creating an armchair (picture below). For the moment it seems like only one problem is left. I cannot enable andquot;render shadowsandquot; for 3DC’s views, neither in 3D Hal nor in RGB Emulation mode.

But that doesn’t affect me really, cause Pov renders shadows, anyway.

So far I’m quite happy with 3DC back working. Now I can pretend to be a great artist again. andnbsp;;D

Hi Alex,

During the process of solving this problem on my machine first of all I updated my DirectX9 installation to DirectX9a. After that – and without anything else done in addition – I then was able to drop objects on 3DC’s view panels in RGB Emulation mode. I was not able to do that before I updated DirectX.

I’m far away from being a programmer, but to me that indicates that DX comes into account here somehow, cause all in all it appears like that the problem was a package of sources of error: DX version, obsolete registry entries for both 3DC and my old video card (probably for DX too).

If you have a current backup or the opportunity to create one, you might want to try DX9a to find out, if that interferes with your system in a similar way. Well now, just an idea. But who really knows…..

I’m really sorry, but I would not want to check if a DX8.1b installation would bring the problem back to my machine, cause andnbsp;downgrading to DX8 would require me to do a complete new system installation on a clean and formated harddisk.

Anyway, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you! andnbsp; In the case you would find a solution, please make sure to let me know!
