Yeah, however you [i:2q1zjytl]may[/i:2q1zjytl] want to check out the utilities available at [img:2q1zjytl]http://fly.to/mwgfx[/img:2q1zjytl]

for .ace compression. andnbsp;I think he said that the DXT tool can export most images into the 141k .ace files (any 512×512 MSTS texture) like the default .ace files. andnbsp; He also has a command line tool called AceComp, which will also compress the .ace files, but I don’t THINK it will always get the files so small.

As far as I can tell, 3DC can do everything as far as MSTS goes, that 3D Max does (the only other option available at the moment).

The only obstacles to making something exactly like the default models is the deficiencies in the MSTS supplied tools, such as the inability to compress the .ace files as much as the supplied ones. This will also apply to any other 3D modelling tool currently, or soon to be, available.

OK, I have just tried the AceComp.exe on a set of .ace files for my current project which uses a mix of .bmp and .tga textures with transparency and translucency and it seems to work great. Some of my big texture files reduced from 1.4Mb down to 96k.

This is a tremendous utility, and I will thank the author and spread the word.

Last night I uploaded two Illinois Central Coal cars and an ADM tanker, and on all of them I used the command line compression tool (acecomp). andnbsp; It reduced the size of each .ace file from just over 1 meg to around 400-something K. andnbsp; That’s cut more than in half, and I could detect no degradation in quality in the sim. andnbsp; The DXT tool is [i:1hrf1z89]supposed[/i:1hrf1z89] to always reduce the file size to something like 160K (for 512×512) or 43K (for 256×256), but I haven’t tried it yet.

So, it appears to work andnbsp;:)

Has anyone actually tried these ace compression tools, because they will be a major asset to route builders if they work.

Thank you that will help me further…

All the measurements in 3DC are metres, and the grid squares are 1 metre squares. This is what MSTS is expecting, and all measurements in the associated data files are in metres.

Note that in the next version of 3DC Pro, Richard is allowing us to choose to work in feet, and the export to MSTS will automatically convert everything to metres for us.

(Also note that some of the models supplied with MSTS are not exact to scale, so if you stand a scale model next to a supplied locomotive, your model might look a bit small)
