Newb Question…

Good luck with the project Scott. You’ll find many knowledgable people on the forums here that can help with many problems. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

Hi all…

Kinda new in this forum – well – actually really new… <!– s:) –><!– s:) –> I recently chose 3DC over other products because it seem you have the most tools to assist in building Steam Locomotives… I have been progressing through some of the tutorials and am starting to get the hang of navigating around and manipulating objects…

I have a quick question on starting a model… The first of many I am sure… <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

OBTW: Nice to see some familiar faces from train-sim around here…

I have some great plans of a few objects I would like to build… I figured I would start off simple – like with a NW 2-8-8-2 articulated… <!– s;) –><!– s;) –> Just kidding…

I have loaded the plans into the background of the work space – however – the images seem a bit distorted and out of proportion…

First off – is this the preferred way of modeling ??? Load the plans and work off that – or – is it better just to transpose the measurements and build the model without a reference loaded ???

If I am suppose to load it – is there any special prep work on the image prior to loading it ??? Once loaded – is there any way to scale the image so the measurements coincide with the terrific plugins available to build MSTS objects ???

Thanks…
Scott

As always, it depends on <!– s:-) –><!– s:-) –>. I personally prefer to transpose the measurements and build the model without a reference loaded. The more measurements you know, the better the result.
But in the end you have to simplify a lot of things, or represent some details by textures.
Today the art of building rolling stock is not to do every single detail in 3D (rivets, catwalk etc..) but to find a reasonable optimum between poly-count and overall appearance of your model.

good luck

Roman

The answer is that people do both – it’s up to you to decide which option to use.

There is a tutorial on how to use backgrounds in 3DC at

Thanks guys !!!

Roman – yes I agree – for my first attempt I would try to keep the 3d details to a minimum… I should be able to do an OK job painting a believable model if I can only get through the 3d part – lol…

Thanks Paul – hehehe – you helped me out greatly with that AI wheel spin thing – opened a whole new door on MSTS for me… Thanks again… At the time – I didn’t realize I was speaking with someone who has accomplished so much… Wow…

I have already downloaded your ‘How to build a steam engine tutorial’ – it looks like it will be an invaluable aid… I guess I missed that one on importing the plans thing… I will take a closer look…

Thanks for taking the time – guys !!!

This 3D modeling thing is brand new for me… Yahoo…

Regards,
Scott
