More stars: got carried away

Howdy all

Thanks for the comments. andnbsp;I wrote a little script to turn the sphere to show a constellation, and it seems this is the Southern Cross. andnbsp; andnbsp;Since I’m stuck in Brussels I can’t stick my head out the window to check it, as it doesn’t look quite right.

And I need to check the script worked properly, but later. andnbsp;I chucked in a plane and sphere with dark material to see what it would look like in a real scene.

As for the method, I’m sure there are more efficient ways of getting stars: the sky sphere in Povray for example. andnbsp; But I like the fact that they are the real stars in their proper locations.

I can easily convert the script to that only stars of bright magnitude are shown as, say, hexagons, and smaller stars are triangles. andnbsp; That should cut it down.

Here’s another scene using the complete catalog- about
9000 visible stars and objects. andnbsp;Rendered here as squares which gives me a 3DC object of 36000 points, which I think is scratching the limit.

This looks like the southern Cross, but can’t be as epsilon is too big and in the wrong place. andnbsp;Don’t know which part of the sky..

What hemisphier is the map from,N,S,would help in Identifiying it.To me it looks a little like scopius Norther region.

and here’s the picture

George,
I like both the Orion picture and this one. They’re great!

If you change the stars from four points to three(triangle) wouldn’t this reduce your point count by about 25%? Triangles may not look as good for stars, but it would be a lower count….. <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

Definitely cool! 8) Your image isn’t backwards, is it? You should be able to find the North Star and work around from there to identify other constellations.

Wouldn’t that look great as a sky in Train Simulator with a silhouette of a train going over a bridge or across a flat plain at night? <!– s:D –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!– s:D –>
