Mapping – yet again…

When your done will do fine.

The weathered approach will give you a more authentic looking loco IMO..as long as you can create a good paint job.

All,

Question: Is there an EASY way to do the following…

For any given shape – for simplicity sake – let’s say a cube… The side I am trying to texture is a rectangle… The texture I am applying has a large circle that will sit in the center of the rectangle shape… Is there a way to apply my desired texture with zero stretching or distortion ???

Currently – I try to eye ball the proportions of the shape – then kind of guess on the applied texture as to how much of a texture to crop or use… So it makes it very difficult to have the circle remain a perfect circle when applying it to the shape… The proportions never come out right at first and it takes considerable amount work to get decent results…

Follow ???

Scott

The only way to get this to work 100% would be to unwrap each shape perfectly. ie when the checker texture is applied the checker texture would have to lay without any stretching. Very difficult to achieve.

You could apply a square texture, say 256 x 256 to the sides of a 1m x 1m x 1m (in xyz)cube and this would look ok.

You could apply a rectangular texture say 512 x 256 to the sides of a cube 2m x 1m x 2m (in xyz)
and this would look ok.

In other words the ratio of the texture and face(s) need to be the same to retain the perfect circle.

Hi Bazza,

Thanks – yeah – I guess I was hoping I was missing something in 3DC where if a rectangle was 3:2 there was some way to have the texture 3:2 without counting pixels…

Making good progress on the Mountain – again – thanks for that too !!!

Have a good night – sir…

Hi Bazza,

Looks OK now – right ???

I fixed what I could and mapped both sides individually… The shape is still not 100% – but – for this round it will have to be good enough…

Looking perfect, nice render.

Hi Gerrit,

Thanks – appreciate it… Here is the whole model – haven’t posted any updates here in a while…

Hi Scott,

Your model realy looks amazing, I like the details
I wish I was that far with texturing.

Gerrit

Hi Gerrit,

Yeah – the texture process takes more time than building the model… The right texture program helps a great deal…

PSP has many tools to make 2D objects look 3D… I use them a bunch along with drops shadows…

Scott

Hi Scott,
Yes that looks a whole lot better.
The loco and tender so far look very nice indeed, something to be proud of.

How far away are you from a completed textured model.
I would like to see a copy of the completed 3DC file if that’s ok.

Will you ever try to create a fully modeled driving wheel set for it, could be way to many poly’s.
Maybe it could be done with a solid disc type wheel and a texture.
What are the driving wheel dimensions?

Bazza

Hi Bazza,

Thanks – I have a bit more to do – LOL… The picture below is the weathering job I am going to try and replicate… I want this to be a ‘working’ locomotive… We’ll see how well I can do…

Sure – I’ll send you the source – you want it now or when I am done ??? Maybe you can point out other mistakes that I can learn from – so my next model will be that much better…

As for the wheels – the locomotive weighs in at about 11K Poly’s now – so probably not… Performance in MSTS is very important to me… I kind of promised someone to try a port to RW – and – from what I heard can handle more poly’s – so maybe…

It has 73′ Boxpok drivers…

Couldn’t have done this without Paul’s plugins !!! C’mon Richard – we need a fully functional Ver 8 – pleeeeaaaase… Some of the features look very promising…
