lwo imports

great. post some work soon.

I’m trying to import terraine using Terragen, freeware terraine generator (rather like Bryce, but free). My Terragen export options let me export as a Lightwave file, wich I can import into 3DC. My only problem is that Terragen creates HUGE terraines even on the lowest possible settings. I can import the terraine, but once it’s there I can’t do much with it (hoping to trim it down to a usable size in 3DC since Terragen won’t do it).

I can highlight and delete a few points, but 3DC freezes up after a couple of tries, often requiring a reboot as it slows other system resources. I’m running a 1.8 gig AMD with 512 meg ram, winxp if that’s any help.

Knowing I’m dealing with probably a huge number of verticies, is there some way to optimize the terraine object, or is there some cache or something I can increase in 3DC to overcome this problem?

Thanks

i know what you mean. i have been there and done that. love terragen and was thinking about buying it.as for bringing it into 3dc, i would say forget about it.

reason 1.
the texture doesn’t come in so when you try to make your own and match terragen-it looks like crap.
reason 2. as you said it takes too much space.

i do have somewhat of a solution.

use the terrain tool in 3dc…not quite as good as terragen, but it gets the job done and with less of a headache.

this is the terrain generator

.

play around here. the fractal type has sliders you can play with and it is all generated in side of 3dc. the height map lets you import a pic 200×200 or less and use it as a kind of bump map. –you know in terragen how you draw the height map on the black blank terrain. this is basically that. just make a pic 150×150. the darker a section is the lower it will be. the lighter it is the higher it will be.

same concept as terragen.

any other questions just ask. i tried explaining it the easiest way and in the shortest amount of time

hey gmani where are you from? i figure england? i noticed you spelled terrain ‘terraine’

no, Arkansas, I just can’t spell!

3DC terrain(no e) button…. ahhhhh okay. Didn’t see that one either. Think I may go hide my head a while. Yup. That sounds MUCH easier!

so did this help?

oh, yeah, it did… I think…. :O
I just imported an avatar pic of myself as a terrain, being I couldn’t think of what other pic I had less than the 200 X 200 constraint.

I make one ugly mountain range!

(but when I experiment around with it a while, I’m sure this will be just fine for the purpose I have in mind)

Thanks again, korben, you fixed it!
