Insertion Point problem?

5.0.5 centers each idividual object on their frame when it imports. In general this is a andquot;good thingandquot; since it means that if you import an object with wheels the wheels are already centered and there is no need to run the andquot;Centerandquot; operation on them which would repositioning the objects.

So, can you give me an example of how this causes problems for you? Do you import one part at a time? I could see that might be a problem.

Richard

I have 3DC 5.0.5 Pro. I usually create 3D models in TurboCAD 8.0 Pro, place insertion point at end of long 3D model, export 3D model to 3DS file, and import 3DS model into 3DC Pro. 3DC 5.0.4 Pro and earlier places the 3D model in the scene correctly but 3DC 5.0.5 Pro ignores the 3D model’s insertion point and places it in the wrong place in the scene using the 3D model’s center point. Jeffrey.

I would disagree. Most commercial products do not provide any new features for free. For example Truespace charge for both 4.1 and 4.2. But there are exceptions. I guess TurboCAD is one of the exceptions.

Service packs are a different story of course.

Richard

Richard, Most software publishers usually charge for major upgrades such as from TurboCAD 7.X to TurboCAD 8.0 but they don’t usually charge for minor upgrades or service packs such as from TurboCAD 7.0 to TurboCAD 7.1. I didn’t remember if you charged for upgrading 3DC 4.X to 3DC 5.0. Jeffrey.

Richard, I downloaded and installed 3DC 5.0.4 Pro. I will not use version 5.0.5 because you won’t add an option to the program to change the behavior of the insertion point when importing 3DS files into the program. I’ll write a note and put it on my monitor telling me not to use version 5.0.5. Jeffrey.

Okie Dokie Jeffrey. 5.0.4 is a better release for you and you should stick with it.

But there is one thing that I want to mention. No one is entitled to a free upgrade with 3DC. I could charge for every significant new feature. I could have charged a fee for the new MSTS plug-in, but I did not. Every new feature that you have got since you purchase 3DC was free. How many free new features have you got with TurboCAD since you purchased it? The fact is that sometimes you have to take the bad with the good, and I personally think that the good far outweighs the bad in the new release.

Richard

Please add the option to change the behavior. I would go back to version 5.0.4 but I overwrote the *.MSI files for version 5.0.4 with the ones for version 5.0.5 yesterday. Jeffrey.

The import works as designed. It now handles the most common case well. There are some specific cases where it is not optimal, but better to handle the common case well. The most common case is where the user wants to retain the rotation point of wheels. It does this now.

To move your model relative to its root frame, alt-select the andquot;mainandquot; part of your model and apply a Shift operation so that is located as you would like.

If this turns out to be a great hardship then of course I will add an option to change this behaviour. But to be honest, unless a new bug is found in 5.0.5 there will not be any further changes made for 5.0.5. Of course you can revert to the previous version (5.0.4) until an update includes this change.

Richard

Sorry Jeffrey, but the feature list for 5.0.5 is frozen. I won’t risk breaking existing features by adding new features at this point in the 5.0.5 development phase. I’ll add your enhancement request to my list.

5.0.4 is still available for download.

Richard

Richard, For example, I create a subway station with two tracks and one island platform using TurboCAD. The station needs 12 3D boxes for the floor, two side walls, roof, platform base, platform, four rails, and two end walls. After placing the insertion point at one end of the station and exporting the station to 3DS file, I import the station into 3DC Pro but the insertion point is at center of the station instead of at one end of the station. I didn’t have this problem in earlier versions of 3DC. Please fix this problem or give users the option of how the insertion point is handled. Jeffrey.
