help with povray

The method you used is always a good idea – uninstall, delete and restart. It gives the os chance to forget…… <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

I have installed Povray 3.5 beta, but when I try to open it up in 3DC a window pops up saying andquot;POVRay was not found. 3DC requires POVRay version 3.5 or higher. Would you like to visit the POVRay web site for this free download?andquot; But I do have it installed. Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

You’re probably not doing anything wrong. What 3DC does is it looks in the Windows registry for the POVRay keys and uses that to find POVRay. If it can’t find the registry key it asks you if you want to download and install it. For some reason it doesn’t see your registry key for POVRay.

I am going to look into this.

Richard

I agree with Alan. One of the things to try is to uninstall POVRay and then reinstall.

Do you know how to use regedit? If so can you look to see that you have this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTPOV-Ray.SceneshellOpencommand

and what the value of that key is? On my computer it has a value of:

C:PROGRA~1POV-RA~1.5binpvengine.exe /EDIT andquot;%1andquot;

Richard

It might be worth un-installin and re-installing povray ? (always a good bet <!– s:) –><!– s:) –> )
Another idea – if you have povray 3.1 installed [i:fkx0l45v]after[/i:fkx0l45v] the beta this could cause problems ?

I just tried this on my test computer and could not find any problems.

Can you start up POVRay and select andquot;About POVrayandquot; to see what version number (and beta number) it says you have?

Richard

It says: Version 3.5.beta.11.icl.win32

There is another choice (BMRT-http://www.exluna.com/products/bmrt/index.html), but POVRay is the best choice. Maybe someone at one of the POVRay news groups can help.

If it were me I would uninstall, delete the POVRay folder, and then reinstall. It can’t make things worse and it might help.

Richard

Well, I uninstalled Povray and then reinstalled and now when I try to start it up outside of 3DC, it won’t even start up. So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling again but it still won’t start up. Something happend and I don’t know what. Any suggestions. Isn’t there another raytracing program you can use besides Povray for 3DC?

No trouble at all. Weird things happen with computers. It was just your turn. andnbsp;:)

Richard

Thanks for all the help! I finally got it fixed. What I did was I uninstalled povray and deleted the povray folder and then I shut down my computer. Then I restarted it and reinstalled povray and everything is working fine now. Thanks again. Sorry, I hope I wasn’t too much trouble. I still don’t see why it wouldn’t have worked just by me uninstalling it and then reinstalling without having to shutdown.

In your last post you said
[BLOCKQUOTE class=’ip-ubbcode-quote’]quote:
when I try to start it up outside of 3DC, it won’t even start up
[/BLOCKQUOTE]
so will it start up inside 3dc ?

If so perhaps you have installed to another directory on your disk and your old shortcut is pointing elsewhere ?]

Another option – if you are running win me/xp then you could try andquot;roll backandquot; (or what ever it is called) as it sound like something is corrupted ? (restore ?)

good luck

Alan
