Hello and some advice needed

Rich,

I have changed my grid to be 100 by 100 meters and mostly work to scale or for detailed stuff (like railcars) in superscale (build the model x times larger than real life so you have a better grip on details and then rescale prior to export). Rescaling in 3DC is easy as 123… once you have finalized your model, it will be in a single hierarchy (that’s how MSTS wants it, one Main group and all the rest hanging off that group). Just select the main object in the hierarhy display and right click to select the andquot;Entire hierarchyandquot;. Then again right click to select Scale (not by size but by factor) and enter the enlargement/reduction factor for the model – e.g. x:10, y:10, z:10 to enlarge it 10 times or x:0.1,…. to reduce it by a factor of 10). This will rescale all of your model proportionally.
Have fun…

Yesterday I completed my first building in 3DC, LP version. I haven’t exported it yet to MSTS yet. My question is in the way I created the awning for the building. This awning is very simple. It’s a half-triangle shape that is 16′ in length. The way I created the half triangle shape was to take a cube and stretch it to length. Then I used the extrude to raise the cube an additional couple of feet. Then I trimmed off two points on one side to get the slope. It worked fine, but I was just wondering if that was the way I should’ve done it or is there a preferable way. Thanks and greetings to all here. andnbsp;:)

Good question Rich!
andnbsp;I just got an e-mail asking the same thing-only exporting X into Dark Basic. I suggested scaling up in 3DC first, but is there a better way? It’s the right size in the game editor, but unworkable in 3DC. [ just scale back, right? ]

Heya Jan!

New question… now that I have the building made, and have exported it but it’s real tiny, how do I increase its size to a normal building size? I made it about 10 times smaller than the real thing to fit the grid. Thanks!

Rich,

welcome to the forum and to 3DC … you’ll quickly find out that this tool can do so much more than anything you used before…
I started with my simple objects (remember the refinery) and am now in more complex car and engine modeling… it’s just great! And if you need tips or tricks, just drop a line here and an army of experts is at your service

how many ways would you like <!– s;) –><!– s;) –>

one way:

1) cube primitive, right click, select Scale/To Size – enter maximum dimensions of the canopy (16’x4’x3′?)

2) select one of the points at top rear

3) hold the CTRL key down and select the one nearest at the front.

4) run the andquot;Weld to Firstandquot; point object operation

5) repeat steps 3/4 at the other end

Thanks bunches. I had missed the feature points could be individually selected. Once I saw this I was able to create an awning as the awning really is. Simple I know. <!– s:-) –><!– s:-) –>

Building in the proper size would have been my preference too. Up until now though, I have heard and been advised to scale the building down to fit the default grid size. Is it the general consensus here then to build in full scale?

Initially when I tried to build in full scale the model when off the grid. I can see where the grid can be increased though and wished I had done that. This is a pretty simple building though, rescaling piece by piece won’t be that much trouble. There’s not many pieces.

For MSTS, the default 3DC background grid is 1m squares, and all sizes shown in object properties, or when extruding or resizing, are also in metres. This can be changed to feet if you really want.

If you know the required size in metres, select your object, right click and ‘scale to size’ and enter the values. Better to build to the final size in the first place though.

Note that primitives when first dropped onto the workbench are 1m x 1m x 1m

This was in the newbies forum a few weeks ago, it may help …
