extra lip in primitives/ Cogs?

The top face is no longer convex. In order for it to render correctly it needs to be convex. You can make it convex using the triangulate or edge operations. You may want to use the extrude technique to create a cog. It will make it simpler for you.

Looking from the top;
If I make a cyllinder and pull out/push in one wall (four points) There is a lip there that will not select…

I select using [select groups] [alt (mouse)select four corners]

I am trying to make cogs or gears…
Is there an easier/smarter way?

Why is that lip there when I push in on one of the side walls????

TKS for any help you can give me.

P.S.
It appears as though either the top, or bottom face of the cylinder is not performing properly when the side face is shifted inward.

Make sure that in the andquot;Tools/Optionsandquot; menu, you have seleted/checked andquot;Render Using Two-Sided Facesandquot;, and use the andquot;Optimize Object Geometryandquot; and andquot;Solidify Selectionandquot; Operations before shifting the faces inward. I’m not sure but it may help.

Here’s a picture of a gear that I did a while back. I did this using the Extrude method mentioned above.

Thanks Alan!
I will give it a try and back…

Here’s an image of the andquot;lipandquot; just in case…
Maybe it just looks like it is there?

You need to tell 3DC where to andquot;cutandquot; the top/bottom of the cylnider by picking the points and adding edges.

Hope someone comes along with a better answer – I would use the extrude out idea myself <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

I dont know why the lip/overlap is there but you could try this to make a cog….

With your cylinder select every other face and extrude it a small amount…..

There is another way – bit harder to do <!– s:( –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!– s:( –>

You need to add edges to the points that you want to move – so the top/bottom of the clyinder know where to andquot;moveandquot;…. does that make sense ?

Thanks for the help…
I am starting to understand why it is there and how to fix it <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

And that extrude is the best way to go…

TKS Les; will give it a try…
