Exporting unoptimized DL

I have this problem again. I have two very similar models, I only updated the material on the second and added 2 benches to the interior. The first one with unoptimized distance levels loads without trouble into MSTS, the second crashes MSTS with unoptimized distance levels and only loads with no distance levels at all. I tried to minimize the group-count and the hierarchy-depth, compressed both files but nothing helped.

What could be the problem if a model exported with andquot;no distance levelsandquot; loads fine with MSTS but the same model with andquot;unoptimized distance levelsandquot; lets MSTS crash?
Both *.s files are compressed to a size of 133kB resp. 135 kB. So it’s not the size of the file…

No ideas or suggestions?

None from me. Sorry.

Ok – i use a version of 3DC still that is quite outdated (before the MSTS Wizard!), BUT it is recent enough that it asks me about the LOD/Optimized LOD. andnbsp; Now again, this is an old version so i may be WAYYYY off base here, but in that version selecting NO for creating distance levels did just that – no distance levels at all. andnbsp; Now, selecting andquot;YESandquot; there and andquot;NOandquot; to optimized levels created one distance level (i think the model in it’s entirety was visible up to 700m and the next LOD was the main object only visible up to 2000m). andnbsp; With any LOD at all, MSTS gets VERY picky about what materials are applied to what, ESPECIALLY regarding transparency and transluceny. andnbsp;I had a similar problem on a model i built where i had a translucency applied to the same object as a straight .bmp. andnbsp; It’s translucency level was 2. andnbsp; It did not work, UNTIL i mapped another area with a TRANSPARENT material (off the same texture map as the trasnlucency). andnbsp; Then it worked.
So…. andnbsp; If by chance you are mapping more than one material to the same object, this may be what you’re running into. andnbsp;Again, i may be wayyyy off base here, but i have had your problem in the past and that is the way i solved it.
And yes, 3DC always said not to do that, but i always find a way to make it work! <!– s;) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!– s;) –>
