Editting scene details

Now I ‘aint 100% on this but……

I just tried this – I andquot;madeandquot; 3 bmps in an art package and saves as 1.bmp, 2.bmp and 3.bmp. I also altered them slightly and saved them a jpegs (1.jpg, etc). All saved into the same folder.
In 3dc I textured a cube with the 3 bmps – and exported as andquot;bmp.xandquot;. Loading andquot;bmp.xandquot; into notepad I searched for andquot;bmpandquot; and altered these to jpg and then saved as andquot;jpg.xandquot;
Importing them back into 3dc I just got untextured cubes [u:2i7khjjp]but[/u:2i7khjjp] loading them into the andquot;mesh viewerandquot; that came with blitz I got (as expected) the two different textured cubes…..
So couldn’t you just do this ?
Or have I,once again, got the wrong end of the stick ?

Oh, okay.
I get it.
Still a little fiddley on a complex object, but I understand how to change the material of a face without remapping now, thanks.

One way that I know is to use the andquot;Update Materialandquot; plug-in:

1) Sample the material

2) Select faces by material

3) Change the texture

4) Use the andquot;Update Materialandquot; plug-in

Or write a script to do it.

Or if all of you layers are available (probably not) you can click on each andquot;materialandquot; layer change the texture a click andquot;updateandquot;.

Hmm.
Not sure what you mean.
I tried the plug in, but all of my objects are compacted with multiple textures and a mixture of wrapping / face painting, and this method just wrapped the 1 texture over the whole model. :-/

Is there no way I can just edit the internal model script to point to a Jpeg instead of a bitmap (even if it’s only done in the DX export stage)?
Thanks

I think you either misunderstand me or you have pasted the wrong link.

This tutorial tells me nothing I need to know.

Oh well, there doesn’t seem 2 B an easy way other than to re-texture everything manually.

Thanks for trying.

This tutorial describes the sampling procedure:

It is the correct link. Search for the word andquot;sampleandquot;. Instead of changing the material palette’s ambient, change the texture, and use the UpdateMaterial plug-in.

Richard

What I want to do is edit the details of the scene so that instead of looking for a [b:3qf6774e].BMP[/b:3qf6774e] it looks for a [b:3qf6774e].JPG[/b:3qf6774e] of the same file name.

I have done LOTS of modelling for a game which can now import Jpegs with it’s DX8 support and not just Bitmaps, and I want to take full advantage of this.

To save re-texturing/ remapping everything (weeks of work) I’ve tried to access the scene details, but it doesn’t seem to let me edit it, even though it has a andquot;Saveandquot; button.

Can anyone help?
Thanks.

what I found…..

;D

np – hope it works !

now all I need to do is work out where my textures are going in 3dc, I am sure they used to load……

Ok. if your gonna get THAT low tech about it. andnbsp;;)

rename the .3dc file to .mdb

open with MS Access

find all of the places where *.bmp is mentioned and change to *.jpg.

save

rename back to andquot;new.3dcandquot; and see if it did it for you.

I did this to fix a stupid user error I made once.

YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

That’s [b:3a981kpv]EXACTLY[/b:3a981kpv] it! <!– s;) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!– s;) –>

Thank you [i:3a981kpv]very[/i:3a981kpv] much Alun!!!
I didn’t even know you could open a X file with notepad and save it’s details after you change them!

This is a massive help, especially on my complex levels.
I’ve decided to duplicate all my BMPs for JPGs in the .X model folder, and keep the BMPS for editing in a 3DC environment.

Thanks once again for spending the time you did.

If they load in other things that’s good enough for me. 8)

I imagine it’s because the DX import in 3DC only imports DX7 based models (which means only .BMPs)

I’ve noticed before that the import usually looses things in the translation.

Thanks for that.
It would of come in handy if I had MS Access.
Doh! andnbsp;:P

I’m curious as to how you knew you could do that?

It comes from having read every post in the forum before asking questions that might already have been answered. I read about it and it stuck in my head. andnbsp;

I really messed up my texture assignments on one of my models and this was the solution that got me back on andquot;trackandquot; without pulling my hair out.

It’s not for everyone, obviously. andnbsp;NEVER do this to your only copy of a model. andnbsp;N E V E R. andnbsp; It’s akin to hacking your Windows registry. If you feel comfortable, do it. If you don’t… don’t even think about it.

(Unless you didn’t like your model or something)
