creating terrains

Excellent news.. Many thanks, brilliant service as ever andnbsp;:)

Hi, I want to create my own terrains. I would like to know how do I create a height map? I tried using the paint program but I could not figure out what colors to use to get the hieght I wanted. Does a certain color make a certain height? andnbsp;
Thanks!

Good question. The easiest way to create a height map is to use a gray scale image. White is the highest and black the lowest. If you use a color image it is basically the andquot;brightestandquot; colors that are the highest.

Well… I don’t see why it can’t be done. As long as the points follow a grid. But it would take a script, or plug-in, to do it.

What chance of being able to import map/contour data?

Yes. It does use a new random seed each time you change a parameter.

You wouldn’t be able to get the same shape even with the same seed when the detail level changes, but some of the other functions (such as bumpiness etc.) should be adjustable without affecting the general shape. I’d have to look at it. I’ll add this to my andquot;listandquot;.

While someone has mentioned terrains, I have a quick question.
When generating one as fractal or random, changing any one of the parameters (eg. bumpyness) seems to regenerate the terrain with a different seed, instead of just when you hit the button.
I know that two terrains with different settings would look different, but what I would expect is somthing like the following.
1) create initial terrain of given size,
2) hit regenerate until I find something I like
3) change bumpyness eg. 1-2
4) Don’t like new bumpyness, change back to 1
In this case the terrain is different to the one created at stage 2.
(in fact it even changes if you click on the slider for bumpyness without changing the value!)

I’ve updated this for the next release. In the next release the only time the random number seed changes is when you click the andquot;Recreate terrainandquot; button.

Thanks for suggesting it. It actually improves the feature considerably.
