crashes and crashes…

Mel,
You should not have to record your operations. andnbsp;Every operation performed on your model in shown and stored in the left hand panel.

Just ranting…<!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

Every once in awhile, don’t you just get sick of the fact that 3dC crashes so often?
I really enjoy the program and love working with it, but far too often and without any real warning, the program dies. andnbsp;Typically it tells me that it’s my graphics adapter…however, I know that’s not the case:) andnbsp;I’ve run the program on 4 different computers, all with different graphics adapters, and none of them work well. andnbsp; You’ll be going along and then boom, either you tried to paint using something it didn’t like, tried to undo something it didn’t want to do, decided to go back and change the animation frames, or who knows what else you might be trying to do…crash, crash, crash

It’s very disheartening…
Not enough so to make me change programs, and again I really do enjoy modeling with 3dC, but man is it ever unstable.

And does a great job of working…most of the time…

However, often when trying to pull up the andquot;recovered fileandquot; the system will crash again with the graphics error. When this happens, the next time the program is launched, it is in compatibility mode and has to be shut down and relaunched once again to get it to go through the compatibility tests. That process takes 5 minutes to go through. I’ve found it better to try and save often, but I’m not always in the habit…

Again though, my thought is that a program that tries to help you out after crashing is a great thing…a program that doesn’t crash to begin with is better….I work for the evil empire (MS) so I know all about crashing and what other people think of it, I’m very glad that 3dC saves files, but have had enough bad experiences with it, I typically don’t go after the saved document unless I hadn’t saved recently (w/in the last 15 minutes)

at this point, I’m thinking this thread should end…I love 3dC and have been using it almost daily for 4 months…I do however feel like often you have to touch it with andquot;kidglovesandquot;

I appreciate that Richard does so much to make the program better and is so involved with a community he created…certainly didn’t want this to be an attack thread, just a venting frustration for me…and I’ve done that thanks!

4.22 is much better in many aspects, again I applaud the program…

That little tirade came after having an animation crash while using 4.22.
Went back and repeated what I thought to be the exact steps, and it worked fine, it was just that intial frustration of another 30 minutes of work being wiped out by a crash…

No worries really, I’ve learned to save things often, and I’m happy with 3dC and look forward to every version that comes out!

I don’t understand why your work is wiped out after a crash. andnbsp; When 3DC crashes and I restart the program the software queries the user about recovering an unsaved file. andnbsp;I answer yes and the file is opened as a temporary file that has all the previous edits right before the crash. andnbsp; The only edit missing is the one that caused the crash. andnbsp; andnbsp; If you observe the 3DC object structure, every manipulation of the object is stored as it is edited. andnbsp;I really like this philosophy. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

What version of 3DC are you using? If you aren’t using 4.22 I would suggest using it.

And regarding the message given when a crash occurs: People who have very frequent crashes are often helped by updating their drivers (or reverting to older more stable versions). It isn’t the whole answer, but it does help many people.

Richard

I find that i get very fast with applications the more i get used to them.

I find that going fast while painting individual faces will make me crash.

I find its usually me going too fast for the program.

Yes it has crashed a few times out of the blue but i still love this software like it was a dear friend <!– s:) –><!– s:) –> ;D
422 pro crashes a lot less often than it used to. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

The auto recovery feature is a god send and saves a lot of cussing and swearing and jumping up and down like we all do sometimes <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

Oh yeah…

I love this program, and I really can’t see myself using anything else because Richard really nailed exactly the things that I found intuitive and simple in a modeler. I mean, I can take a cube and end up with something terribly complex like a helicopter in a short time.

3DC does get miffed at me when I try to get too ambitious…so I’ve learned over the months exactly what works and what doesn’t, and I stick with the things that work. I also save frequently, and always right before I do something that 3DC might not appreciate me doing.

I’ve also learned to carefully watch and record what I do when building something, and then go back and replicate the end result in a simpler manner if 3DC starts crashing.

4.22 is pretty much rock solid on my machine as long as I don’t try to be an idiot with the object operations <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>
