Cant save in Windows 7

From what I’ve read on the web their isn’t going to be a work around for this. I’ts one of those annoying features the developers have written into Windows7 just to pee us all off. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>
I’m sure they do this on purpose just so they can un-write it for Windows8. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

However, when you think about it, it does seem to make some sense not to write the data files from all your apps into the Program Files folder.

3DC installed and ran with apparently no problems in Windows 7 Home Premium until I tried to save my models. Models made after I installed 3DC into Windows7 can be saved with no problems, but the models I made before Windows 7 cannot be saved, either with ‘save’ or ‘save as ..’. Any changes I make to models created prior to my W7 installation are not updated when saved. The date stamp on the 3DC document does not change.

The files are not read-only.

I considered permissions and tried to run as Administrator but get a message ‘Cannot configure DirectX …’. I have a new state of the art graphics card and W7 has DirectX 10.

I considered compatibility and tried to run in XP service pack 1, 2 and 3 modes and get a message ‘Cannot configure DirectX …’. I have a new state of the art graphics card and W7 has DirectX 10.

Does anybody have a suggestion what I can try next?

Mike.

I had the same problem, it seems Windows7 doesn’t like you saving app data to your Program Files folders.
So what it does is it saves the file data to the Users App Data folder, then creates a Compatibilty tab in the folder you tried to save to.
If you click on this Campatibility tab your files will appear as if by magic. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>
However if you try to open one of these files from within 3DC you can’t because you can’t navigate to the Compatibility section of the folder using the Save/Load dialogue window
You will get this problem with any app, not just 3DC, if you try to save files into the Program Files folders.
It’s evidently now ‘bad’ practice to do this. <!– s:? –><!– s:? –>

Anyway the trick is to create a new folder on your C or any other drive, call it say My 3DC files, drag all your old 3DC files into this folder and you will be able to edit and save files as before.

Hope all this makes sense.

A big thanks Bazza. I followed up on what you wrote and discovered that some of my files had been saved in app data in a folder called ‘Virtual Store’. I did not know this existed so read up on it … interesting stuff.

All the same I followed your advice and now save my 3DC projects on another drive and it works good. I’ll be looking out for this kind of thing with other apps also in future.

I’m just wondering. Does 3DC version 8.x address this situation so that required permissions etc are now obtained?
