cannot get items to merge

Help please just switched to 9.1after using 7.2 for ever
I load 2 cubes, make them touch, then try to merge them. None of the commands merge, union, lite up?

Merge works a bit different in version 8 and 9.
Select the first shape, hold the CTRL key and select the second shape.
Then select the Merge command.
