6.0.1.1 Speed

sounds like it’s not using the HAL device for rendering
– check the Tools/Options/Device tab…

I see a dramatic slowdown in 3DC moving from 6.0.1.0 to 6.0.1.1 on my machine.

I’m fairly certain that I’ve installed correctly, uninstalling ALL 3DC versions on the machine, deleting all 3DC directories and files below andquot;Program Filesandquot; and then installing. I’ve swapped between the two versions twice with the same results.

Time to open to a new scene: 31 seconds for *.1.0 and 73 seconds for *.1.1.

Time to close out of an empty scene: 3 seconds for *.1.0 and 10 seconds for *.1.1.

*.1.1 is unusably slow in doing operations, selection of faces and points lags by sometimes seconds.

Any and all advice accepted, my machine stats are:

OS: Microsoft Windows 98 (4.10, Build 2222) andnbsp;A
Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.00GHz
Memory: 512MB RAM
Page File: 125MB used, 1411MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 8.1 (4.08.01.0901)
DirectX Files Tab: No problems found.
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4800
Display Memory: 127.5 MB
Current Mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit)(optimal refresh rate)
Driver Name: nvdisp.drv
Driver Version: 4.13.01.4109 (English)

Thanks in advance!

That’s really Odd… It must a a WIN98 Issue.

I have a very similar system andnbsp;2GHZ, 512M Ram, Nvidia 128M – andnbsp;TI4600, etc, but I run XP.

It takes 13 seconds to load to a blank page.

Yes, of course I didn’t [b:xewv0aba]plan[/b:xewv0aba] to slow it down andnbsp;:). But, usually when the program slows down I have some idea as to the cause. But, the changes I made in 6.0.1.1 to support the new Bend operation don’t seem to be something that would slow things down. Usually I can say andquot;oh I know!andquot;. This time I can’t.

Hi Richard,

I had 5.7a and 6.0.1.0 installed. I had just finished major changes to my piper plugin and tested it with both.

I uninstalled 5.7a and 6.0.1.0, installed 6.0.1.1, compiled piper and went to test. 6.0.1.1 seemed sluggish so I did a couple of simple timings, unistalled 6.0.1.1, installed 6.0.1.0 and got the results discussed earlier.

Since, I’ve bounced between both versions (doing clean unistalls and installs each time) with consistent results, 6.0.1.1 being sloooow, pro features installed or not.

I figure you didn’t plan on slowing it down, no problem to stay with 6.0.1.0 for now. Let me know if you need any specific tests done.

I don’t believe I made any changes that could have affected this. But I guess I must have. So you have been uninstalling and reinstalling to check timings?

All I can suggest at this time is to revert to the previous version until I figure out the cause.

Richard

Paul.

Good hunch but no cigar… HAL is selected in both versions. BTW, the speed difference is evident with and without installing the pro features.

pwillard,

Could be a Win98 issue, perhaps Richard can shed some light after his holiday. I’m pretty sure that XP and Me removed some hard resource limits in Win98, but don’t know why *.1.1 would expose them.

Anybody else have 6.0.1.1 on Win98?

Please pass on any other ideas. I’ll drop back to 6.0.1.0 for the time being, plenty of work to do.
