3DCP Crashing: additional info

A couple of windows diagnostics might help get that info…and more

Go to start/run and type andquot;dxdiagandquot; without the quotes to get you all sorts of info on DirectX on your system.
And also at start run you can type andquot;msinfo32andquot; without the quotes to get the system information….(as long as you are in win98/ME for the second one:)
Also there is a DirectX cpl which can sometimes be of help, you can usually find a copy for download by doing a search for it. andnbsp;Once you have it in your windows/system folder, you can go to the control panel for more information about DirectX

If that is at all helpful.

I’ve had a number of trubling performance problems. andnbsp;I seem to be able to make the program crash using what I consider basic operations. andnbsp; For instance, using the paint tool to fill individual facets of a shape, the program will crash. andnbsp;Trying to place object into the object library. andnbsp; The opertions seems to work, but the object never appears in the object window. andnbsp;Closing the program and invoking it again after this has happened, the program won’t initialize. andnbsp;Even after a reboot. andnbsp; If I manually delete the object library I created, it will initialize. andnbsp; How am I able to create a corrupted file so easily?

Are there memory issues involved here that I should be aware of?
Thank you
Hank

Hi,

It sounds to me like you are running 3DC 4.21 or earlier. 4.22 has a much faster installation program and shouldn’t be andquot;painfully slowandquot; to install on any system. I would suggest installing 4.22. On many systems it is much more reliable.

Hmm, on windows 2000 I do this:

Right click on the desktop

Select the ‘Settings’ tab

Click ‘Advanced’ button

Select ‘Information’ tab

I get info that I have directX 8.0 installed…

Windows is a labyrinth when you need to get system information <!– s:( –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!– s:( –>

Where may I find what version of DirectX I’m running? andnbsp; If MSTS loaded the latest version of DX, then that’s the version I’m running.

I hope I don’t have to reinstall, it seems painfully slow on my machine.

Signal,
You need to make sure which version of directx you have. 3DC requires the latest version, which I believe is version 8a. Also, directx MUST be installed prior to the installation of 3DC.
You will also need to check your video card manufacturers website, and make sure you have all the latest drivers for the video card.
Other people have experienced the same problems that you have stated here(I’m one of them). A good workaround for the paintbrush problem is to use the face selection tool, use ctrl-click to select multiple faces, and then paint using the Fill tool in the Object Operations Panel(left side of window)(what I call the toolbox, where all the object operation tools are located). I haven’t experienced any crashes painting this way.
As for the object library problem, I haven’t found a workaround for this as yet. Maybe someone else can help with that.
In summary, I would uninstall 3DC, then install latest directx, and video card drivers, then reinstall 3DC(you wont need to re-register 3DC after reinstallation).
I hope this helps,
Les
