3DC 8.2 V1600 Unable to EXPORT to MSTS

All,

I think I may have discovered another bug in v1600 Trainworks Export function… I don’t seem to be able to export ANY locomotives to MSTS… I am pretty sure I’m doing correctly as I have performed hundreds of exports in the past…

I first tried my current project without success… I first ran the plug-in to texture all untextured faces… I then ran the Trainworks Wizard to generate the special categories for transparency and translucency… I exited the Trainworks Wizard… I then seleceted my "solebar" (root part) and attempted to run the "Trainworks Export" via the "File" menu… The solebar did export – but – only the solebar – the rest of the locomotive was missing,… I guess this is a change from version 7 – as you only selected one part in the old version… OK – no problem – I guess you need to select the entire hierarchy with version 8… I did same – and – started the export a second time… This time the export spit out an error message on the failure… "This MSTS export failed due to groups not containing shapes"…

As a final test – I took an older completed model – exported it fine with 3DC 7.1.2… Took the very same "good" file and converted/loaded into 3DC 8.2 v1600 – and – attempted the very same export procedure for MSTS… The second model failed with the exact same error message… "This MSTS export failed due to groups not containing shapes"…

Has anyone been able to export a locomotive to MSTS in 3DC 8.2 v1600 ??? Am I doing something wrong ??? Mayday, Mayday, Mayday… Help – please…

… reminds me of a problem I’ve reported more than 2 months ago in the bug section.

I noticed that shapes and, more often, groups may not be deleted from the model (see for example, 8.2 b1600: import of 3DO object can corrupt model[/url:2ywgb6g2]).
The object is not visible in 3DC user interface but it is present when running Scene Details.

Maybe running Scene Details will show you some groups without shapes?

Thanks for the input… Yeah – I’d like to see some more of these 3DC 8 reported bugs getting knocked out – a little faster… It’s starting to seem as if 3DC 8 still isn’t ready for prime time…

I did check the hierarchy – and – all the groups appear to be populated to me… I’ll try the &quot;Scene Details&quot; and see if it’s any different… At the moment this seems like a show stopper for me… I guess I can start with the solebar and start doing exports by methodically adding parts until the exports fail… LOL – I’d rather spend my time modeling… I already tried to load my 8.2 model back into 7.1.2 – that fails as well… I could probably make the model a component and move it that way – not sure…

Gladly accept any insights you care to offer on this one – sir… 3DC 8 has been out for a while… We really need a stable – fully functional version of your core product – 3DC 8… In my humple opinion – 3DC .NET seems as if it is still down the road a bit… 3DC 8.2 seems a lot closer to a useable product… Wouldn’t it be better to concentrate your efforts on providing your customers with a true production version 8 – and – then focus on your .NET version ??? Appreciate the help…

Hi Scott,

In 3DC 8 you need to press and hold CTRL+A, then click your main part.

Then select export.

Sorry sir – didn’t work… I held down the Ctrl-A and then selected the &quot;Solebar&quot; (root part)… It looks like 3DC selected all the parts – the entire model became translucent – and the export failed yet again… Right before the test – I exported the larger locomotive in 3DC 7.1.2 – which worked fine… Could I have a problem with both models ??? I didn’t see any &quot;undeleted&quot; groups in the &quot;scene details&quot; that Dom mentioned… Appreciate the help…

Hi Scott,

3DC 8 definitely makes empty groups every now and then.

After merging and grouping some parts, I also noticed some empty groups in one of my models
I simply deleted those empty groups in the hierarchy, and they never caused any problems while exporting to Railworks. But maybe the MSTS exporter is more sensitive for this.
I looked into the scene details of that model, but cannot find any reference of undeleted groups, like Dom mentioned .
If you cannot find any empty group in your models, then this definitely might be a bug.

Hi All,

Spent some more time and consideration on the issue – it must be something that happens during the modeling process… As Dom first stated – it probably has something to do with groups that have run amok… The Error message states the &quot;Groups with no shapes&quot; clause…

As a test – I just went through and created a new wheel set via the Trainworks Engineer – without changing anything on the model – I did a quick &quot;texture all untextured&quot; – then – exported it… IT WORKED…

Really kind of points to the errant group issue – right ???

So if I can’t see them – how do I delete them (even if they did show in &quot;Scene Details&quot;) ???

These errant groups only matter under the &quot;MAIN&quot; part of the hierarchy – right ???

Any help – greatly appreciated – as always…

It turned out to be something very simple. The groups &quot;Air Compress&quot; and &quot;Rods&quot; did not contain any shapes, only groups.

I’ve added a bit more information to the error message for the next release so it will be easier to find the groups with no shapes.

Thanks for looking… Hmm – I had thought of that when attempting to get it to work… I had dropped a cube in a group – that only had shapes in a child group… Maybe I missed one… This is new to version 8 right – as 7 didn’t have any issue with it… Let me verify and get back to work – thanks again !!!
