1978 GMC Jimmy

Oh, but it does mountains too… I live in California and this is a great hauling vehicle for Scouting and such. It only does 65 on the freeway, but it climbs any grade you want.
Have fun with your modelling experiments, I found out the best way to learn all the good stuff Richard has been putting into 3DC is play, play, play …

A 1978 GMC Jimmy, ( I have one outside ) Had alot of trouble rounding the body edges. It started with a cube obviously, but had many extra faces and edges so when i tried to chamfer i got very weird results. Also havent figured out the smooth operation well yet either..any tutorials on the smooth operation?? This is the truck I am asking help in animating in andquot;New Usersandquot;

With the roof so square, it almost looks like a half breed …. GMC Jeep???!!!

I could also use a procedure list of some kind… like,
make object, then compact? optimize first? Or, build it, then optimize and compact? I would love to know the most benificial way to procede to take the stress of my system. andnbsp;

blaydrnnnr,
That looks great!! ;D

For getting more rounded corners I would suggest the Bevel, Chamfer, or Crease Operations. After doing several operations to get the overall shape you may find the Crease Operation to be the best option, but I’m sure there are others.

Using Chamfer can indeed be tricky in some areas, but using the Weld Operations can provide a good way out for some of those weird looking results.

The Bevel Operation seems to work best on the larger areas, for me anyway. A small Bevel amount can produce nicely rounded appearing edges.

I have used the Optimize Object Geometry Operation on primitive objects, semi-finished, and finished models and have had good results in all of these(this is before colors, materials, and textures are applied), so you can probably use it as you see fit.

I usually save the compacting for the final step. This could be taxing on some machines especially if you have performed many operations.

Overall, experimenting with various operations to see their results, and/or combined results should tell you a lot about what will work for you and what will not.

Hope this helps,

Les

Anybody likes to trade that Jimmy in for a real cornbinder … here’s my 1973 International Travelall…
It is a work in progress and more of an exercise in detailed modelling and super-scaling.
One day I’ll turn her into an engine for Train Simulator…

Nice truck Trainsmurf!
But we dont bind corn in Virginia..we climb mountains…. <!– s;) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!– s;) –>
I really liked the interior..i havent even tried to get that detailed yet. The Jimmy is an experiment i was doing to try to see what I could do with textures, and POV….and I am really trying to get the basics of animating it as well….

Hey Les!!!
Sorry it took so long to reply. Been working alot these days. Thanks for the help, I have since gotten a much better model, and have been playing around with the animation of it. Figureing the best way to round the body was indeed taxing on my system. But…. as long as I can keep retrieveing the model after the crash, I eventually get through the process. Now for the animation problems……thats a whole other story…LOL
Thanks again for the help..its always greatly appreciated!!!!!
