1267 Upgrade Crashes 8.1 3DC (Resolved)

I’ll call this one resolved. I guess I hadn’t set everything quite right on previous releases.

Hi Richard,

I tried to install the new 1267 8.1 on my Vista box tonight… The previous version of 8.1 was licensed and running normally… The install did not have any errors…

Upon launching 8.1 1267 – application crashes – ERROR 430 – Class does not support Automation or does not support expected interface…

I went in to ‘Add and Remove Programs’ and we really need a version number – as I have two instances of 3DC loaded 7.1.2.0 and 8.1… Both are listed with identical labels – just ‘3DC’… We could use some nomenclature to clarify the version – to make removal simpler…

I’m stuck – what do I need to do to get 8.1 running again ???

Thanks…

Regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,

You usually get that error if there was a previous version 8 or 8.1 that was not uninstalled first.

Try removing everything then re-installing.

Hi Paul,

I must have misread a post or something – I thought I was supposed to install over the top of the previous install… Thanks for clarification…

And OBTW – what’s the poly count on that little jewel Richard has posted on the home page ??? Very nice work – sir…

Regards,
Scott

Richard thought it might install over the top but didn’t when I tried it.

You may need to re-alias the cab to run it unless the steam4me website comes back but it will show up in the shape viewer.

Hi Paul,

Sorry – no joy…
Uninstalled 8 – rebooted – installed again…

ERROR 430…

LOL – as per a previous post – the uninstall routine sure seems to leave much of the program still in the registry…

I’ll try it one more time… I still have 7.1.2.0 loaded on this machine…

Scott

Hmm – wait one…

I just noticed when I ran the ‘Un-Install’ via the control panel – it didn’t delete any of the actual program files on the hard drive…

Let me try deleting these files by hand and trying this again…

Hi Paul,

That did the trick – thank you…

I’ve changed the instructions to uninstall first. It really shouldn’t be necessary to uninstall. I’m not quite sure why it is.

For MSI’s you need to make sure the MSI version number is over 1.0.0.0 and incremented for each update – the product code GUID also should change.
Then it just needs to be set to detect and remove previous installations.

Are you using the old VB6 Interdev Installer tool or one of the newer visual studios ?

Maybe it is just that I haven’t changed the version number, but I thought I had.

I definitely change the Product code. I know when I don’t because it causes problems.

I’m using the Visual Studio Installer from Visual Studio 6.

This used to work, but now it seems that it doesn’t.

Any idea how to set it to ‘detect and remove previous installations’? Maybe I need to manually edit it with Orca or something similar? I don’t see an option for that. I assumed it was ‘automatic’ if you changed the product code and kept the same upgrade code.

That’s what I thought too – just the product code and installer version change but not the upgrade code.

I’ve moved to using the studio 2005 installer for my plugins, which has more properties available for the project.

Has anyone tried installing recent versions (especially 8.1.2) without uninstalling?

I have.. in this right moment.
3Dc 8.1.2 upon 8.1.1a.. no problem to report.
