Point selection tool? (Resolved)

Confirmed, correct points now highlighted when selected.
A BIG thank you! <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

Dropping a new sphere into a new scene and selecting the point/edge/face select tool I have a hard time selecting points.
The tool always wants to select the same point even if other points are much closer.
Edges and faces work as expected the closest edge/face highlighting.

Strange results with other primitive shapes too and with the rectangle selection tool selecting points.
ps build 8.1.1!

This sounds like the problem Alan is having with the Deform tool.

It’s possible it is a visual thing and the right points are being selected. Try dragging a point and see if it is the one highlighted, or the one you meant to highlight.

I’m wondering if it is a bug in 3DC or in a particular driver.

What video card/chip do you have?

Alan’s system: windows 7 64 bit. ati radeon 4600 series card -driver version 8.690.0.0 (catalyst 10.1)

I have a NVIDIA chip in my system and everything is fine for me.

Anyone with an ATI chip that is having success?

Yes you are correct, the intended point(s) are selected but the display is wrong.
Using the move/scale gizmo the point(s) I thought I selected is moving/scaling (see gif).
Looks like the display shows the first(?) created points in the shape?

My system;
Windows 7 32bit
card ati Mobility Radeon HD 3650
driver 8.641.1.1 (the driver that came with my new lenovo laptop)
3DC 8.1.1

exactly the same problem like Alan has in the deform tool posting.

Fired up the old rig and installed 3DC 8.1.1 on that to try it out.
WinXP, ATI Radeon X1650, driver 8.593.1.0

Same result, correct point is selected but wrong point highlighted.
When expanding the selection with rectangle selection tool the highlight
display the same sequence of points regardless which points are expanded over.

Will make modelling a little interesting as I use a lot of point operations!

I confirm it’s working fine too with a Nvidia 8800 GTX + W7 64.

I’m about to change (in a month) the video card of 2 computers and I selected ATI 5770… maybe I should reconsider this choice.

(I remember some time ago when I had an ATI card, it was the right click menu on the background which took time to show up with anti aliasing on. After changing to a Nvidia card, the problem was gone).

Same here.
3DC 8.1.1a – Ati Radeon 3870 – CCC 9.12 – win Xp SP3.

Is the bug because of the way 3DC highlights the points (too nvidia specific?) or is it an ATI bug driver (which can take a long time to solve as 3DC is certainly not a priority for AMD compared to video games).

In the 7.12 version there isn’t the problem <!– s:P –><!– s:P –>

Found this thread that describes exactly the same thing: [img:3827l0wh]http://amabilis.com/forumattachments/a/tpc/f/654101992/m/119105803?r=119105803#119105803[/img:3827l0wh]

And yes, in version 7.1.2 it worked without problem highlighting the correct points.

I think it is an ATI driver bug. In fact, I’m virtually 100% certain.

I’m using an index buffers for rendering selected points. I think this is pretty rarely done. Probably the only other time it would be used is for a Direct3D based 3D modelling program. A rare thing. And, even then it’s quite conceivable that they don’t used index buffers. There are other ways to do it.

I have a few ideas of how to force the ATI to display the points correctly.

Anyone who is a bit computer savy would would like to try, I have created a new version of a file that trys one of these possibilities. The equivalent file in your ‘c:program files3DC 8’ folder needs to be replaced with the contents of this file. I don’t think REGSVR32 needs to be run on it since it is binary compatible, but maybe.

I see no difference with the new file (with or without the reregistration of the dll)

One more time.

Richard, I installed the new 3dcsg8.dll and got an unrecoverable error msg when trying to start 3DC. After registering the .dll, 3DC started normally. I haven’t had a problem selecting points, edges, or faces with the Point/Edge/Face Selection Tool, but I’m still unable to select them with the Rectangle Selection Tool.
