Ships!

But there’s a little more to this one… I want a hard copy of it for wargaming purposes:
<!– m –><a class="postlink" href="http://www.shapeways.com/model/460770/soviet_petya_class_frigate.html?gid=ug">http://www.shapeways.com/model/460770/s … tml?gid=ug</a><!– m –>
Using 3DC9.1.1, I exported an STL file then uploaded to this site – now I’m waiting for the 3D printer to do it’s stuff and I’ll have a 1:1250 scale model <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt="
" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>
It scales as 1m=1mm when printing, so this model is only just over 6cm long (81m long in real life)
I also had to write my own STL export (very basic) to fix the Y-Z swapping that happened after uploading the model.
[attachment=0:x4mmmcp9]<!– ia0 –>stltext.zip<!– ia0 –>[/attachment:x4mmmcp9] (just drop into the pluginsimportexport folder and register if vista or win7)

It’s now solid! They lost the turrets so I made a couple of new ones.

Another one waiting to be printed – this one is about 12cm long, 16,000 polys much more complex

1/1250 scale Soviet Kresta 2 class cruiser from the 1970’s
Very happy with the result. Stunning detail, down to the gun barrels (0.3mm)

Hi Paul,
As someone who used to ride Fast Attack Submarines – very cool – sir…
Now all we need is for someone to really redo – Harpoon II – or – the even older Task Force 1942 (some of those night battles with all the shells in the air was really something to behold)…

Solid Printing ??? Really – wow – so how much does that cost ??? I’d love to "print" one of my steam locomotives a little bit larger – of course…
Regards,
Scott
