Hi,
When I import a mesh made in 3D World Studio, the object loses it's UVs. When I apply a texture to the object (which I would have assumed would be present at the time of importing) the UVs are all messed up. Is there a way to get around this without unwrapping the model again? Also, I would be interested in a way force the X exporter to copy the applied textures into the export directory, because it's kind of annoying having to check which textures I have used and copy them manually. Thanks in advance. The Sun is trying to kill me! |

Hi, Welcome to the forums.
You didn't mention which file format you are using when you export the model from 3D World Studio. Some file formats don't retain all the texture and Uv info. The .x format is probably the most reliable, thats what I use most of all. First you need to check if the file is exporting OK from 3DWS, try loading it into another 3D app, something like Ultimate Unwrap 3D. When you say the UV's are missing when you import into 3DC do you mean the model imports without any texture showing or is the texture showing but all messed up. If the textures are all messed up then you are probably corrrect about the UV's. However if the model loads but doesn't have a texture applied, the Uv's may still be intact. To check out if the UV's are present in 3DC..... 1) Open the Material Panel and load your UV map as the Primary texture Your UV Map should appeare in the texture tab window. 2) Select the model, and from the Tools menu choose Use Plugin and select Update material Your new texture should appeare on the model....if the UV's are still messed up then you have lost the uv mapping. If you still can't sort it out, I could take a look at it for you, I would need the file you exported from 3DWS and the UV map. If you wan to do this, you would need my mail address, if you send me a PM I'll let you have it. Bazza Mrs Bazza says "just keep taking the tablets dear, and everything will be OK" |

Hi Bazza,
Thanks for the reply, the method you mentioned above works for the exported model (X format). What it was when the model loaded up the texture was missing, then when I used the apply material tool it was re-mapping it thus causing the UVs to go screwy. But it's sorted now thanks Sorry for asking, but I don't suppose you know if 3DCPro can copy the applied textures to the export directory automagically can it, to save me copying the texture manually. Not as far as I am aware but I don't have a problem with this. I keep all relevant files and textures in their own folders So If I were creating say a game/demo which featured say a castle interior, I do the following. Create a folder for the dungeons, inside which would be the 3DC, Giles, UU3D, Fragmotion files and all the textures realating to the dungeon scene. I would do the same for other areas of the castle, then I always know where everything is located. All these folders would end up inside another folder called CastleScene. If your using Blitz or Dark basic, the code would be saved into the CastleScene folder and it's then easy to load up the various areas of the castle from within the code. Yeah, that sounds like the best way to go.
Thanks Bazza. The Sun is trying to kill me! |
