Am tired at squinting at my 17" LCD monitor while building train models in 3DC so am considering going to a 19". Looking at listings I notice that many of the new monitors are wide screen, but I have been away from the hardware scene for a while so am not up on the advantages and disadvantages of this.

Does anyone have any recommendations or comments about which would be better for 3DC work, or article references that might help? I do not spend much time running in MSTS and do no gaming.

Thanks for any help, Bill Smile

My notebook is widescreen. I think widescreen is good for 3D Canvas (since there is the large toolbar on the left side). It works well if you have two views (vertical splitter). But, to be honest, more space either wide or not is always a good thing.

I'm a little bit hazy on hardware too, but you probably have to check that your graphics card supports widescreen monitors.

Hi,

I you change from 17" LCD to 19" LCD, the image will obviously be bigger but it won't change the image aspect as a 17" LCD has the same resolution as 19" LCD : 1280x1024.
Pixels are bigger with a 19" LCD.

If you want to see a real change, go for a 20" LCD (1600x1200) or a 20" wide (1680x1050).

I have a 20" wide (S-IPS panel) and I agree with Richard : the added space is very convenient to use with 3DC.

MSTS doesn't support widescreen so I run MSTS in window mode with 1280x1024 resolution or change the monitor settings to display black lines around the image in order to avoid image stretching.
Another option is to set the video driver not to stretch the image when the image to be displayed has a lower resolution than the monitor native resolution (the driver adds black lines around the image). Such option works within Nvidia drivers. It is also available with ATI drivers but it doesn't work for me (I reported this to ATI but no solution yet; not a big problem however as I can run MSTS in window mode or change the monitor settings).

Hopefully, MSTS will be uninstalled within 6 months when KRS is available.
Like any recent game, KRS should support widescreen.
