I can't seem to find what should be the perferred way to remove texture references from a model.  I've seen a few posts but they have left me confused as to the correct way to do it.

I'm revisiting some of my early work and I have decided to start mapping on some of them from scratch.

Clues?

Not sure if this is the best method but what I do is to select the "main" part whilst holding the alt key (so that the whole model is selected). Then I press the optimise geometry button in the tools menu.

This clears all the texturing as it optimises the parts.

Cheers

I have used Paul Gausden's swap texture plug-in in the past to change textures and mapping however it's easy to miss some small areas at times if the model is already pre-textured which can cause problems with exporting the model into the sim.

Otherwise I think Kevm's method is a good one as it will clear all texture mapping.

Maybe a plug-in that can do this without having to optimise the whole model at the same time is an idea ?

Just so everyone knows, Kevin's tip will NOT work when 6.0.3.0 or higher. The Optimize operation has been re-written to preserve all material information. In the next release (6.0.3.0). Optimize, all of the "Weld" operations/plug-ins and a few others will preserve texture/material information. There will still be a couple that don't preserve material information but I'm getting close to my goal of having all operations preserve material information when possible.

My Swap textures plugin does not remove any texture info, just swaps the file names.

However, if you select an object in Main, it does scan the entire hierarchy and shows all textures used.

Adding an option to remove all textures and masks shouldn't be too difficult...

Done (I think)...

http://www31.brinkster.com/decapod/plugins601.htm

Selecting an object will scan all object at or below in the hierarchy.
The form displayed now has an option which when checked will remove all textures from the hierarchy.

I've tried out your new Swap Textures plugin and while the option to remove all textures comes up, when I select this and OK, none of the textures are removed.
I'm using 3DC 6024 & WinXP. Any thoughts??

hmmmm - it works but does not seem to change the display.

If you run the plugin, save the model, exit and restart 3DC and reload the model, the textures have gone.

I'll have a look at getting the display to refresh properly.

Apologies - the new version at the same URL now works and changes the display.

Materials keep their lighting parameters (ambient, diffuse etc) it is only the texture names that change (or get removed)
