Hello,

I see that GIMP 2.2.13 runs OK on Vista in XP SP2 compatibility mode.

The tools look at least as good as PSP tools for texture creation (and maybe for photo retouching too): resize, clone brush, perspective change, masks, color swap (this one seems more convenient in PSP), rotation…

I found a plugin to create normal maps which could be useful Rail Simulator (however the plugin preview uses OpenGL).

I don't need the PSP organizer (I use faststone viewer), nor gadgets like skin smoothing, time machine, etc…

Any feedback about GIMP 2.2?
Thanks!

While you're looking for paint programs, check out Paint.NET

http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html

I've had a quick look and it seems similar to PSP, it also runs on Windows 64bit operating systems and Vista.

It can also produce normal maps and DDS files (useful for FSX/MSTS-X) with plugins.

Yes, I noticed this nice looking program.
I first skipped it as the main screenshot shows a simple interface with, for example, no clone brush. I just looked here , the software has more features than I thought. So I'll take a look at Paint.NET.

In fact this Paint.NET 3.05 is excellent (I found some forum posts about comparison with other tools but most of them are obsolete as they relate to Paint.NET 2.x). It's a lot lot more than just a MS Paint program update.

Some interesting plugins (some spotted by Paul ; thanks Smile):
DDS
Normal map
Alpha Mask Import Plugin
Perspective change (also possible in the software with the powerful Rotate / Zoom... transformation from layers menu)

With the provided rotation tool and the reshape plugin, it is difficult to make precise perspective change.

For this function PhotoFiltre 6.2.7 (freeware), is better.

PaintShop has a even more convenient perspective change tool:

and horizon rectification tool (by drawing the wanted horizon line):
