My old system crashed, I got it up and running, but lost everything. Including a model I was rendering in POV for about 6 days.( been working on the model and the scene in POV for almost a year!) Yes, ( as I kick myself) I didnt back up my present models. Anyway, even though I got it up and re-downloaded 6.5 and POV 3.6, I lost textures, older renders and models, plugins, etc, I decided to get a new system, especially since XP is now the supported windows for 3DC. My worry is the card. It has an ATI Radeon 9200 128 Mb card in it. I've always used Nvidia with great success. Any known issues with this card anyone? System : 2 Gig Ram, 3.8 Mhz P4, 128 Radeon 9200 XP. And this is the very first time I've ever even seen XP, ( die hard 98se user!) so I am going to be very lost for awhile.I'm alittle nervous about the card, so any info would be greatly appreciated. Also.. I lost Vidget. My converter... anyone know if its still a free download? Thanks in advance to all...

An ATI Radeon 9200 is a pretty good card. It would be considered a "DirectX 8" video card. It has support for Pixel Shader version 1.4 and Vertex Shader version 1.1. I don't expect 3D Canvas to have any requirements beyond this card for a while, but I can't say for certain. And even when that happens there will likely only be a small number of features that you won't be able to use.
In the past ATI Radeon has been the best choice for 3D Canvas but that remains to be seen for version 6.6 and higher. But, since I develop with an ATI Radeon 9800 you will probably find on the whole that you have fewer problems than with a NVIDIA based card. Richard |

I have a ATI Radeon igp 320 in my lap top. Its a year old now, and in all the numerous, graphic intensive programs I have, two seem to kick devils out of my display adapter: 3DC and Tattoo by Terrabit. I might be imagining it but over the last few months, the card seems to work worse and worse.
I've updated drivers twice now, the first time cured certain functions tht wouldn't work at all in 3DC, the second cured most of my speed issues. If Radeon is 'high end', I'd hate to see the low end. But, not all things being equal, one handicap is I'm running a lap top, which aven ATI tends to ignore, though they make cards for them. Perhaps the 9200 desk top series is less problematic, good luck with it. There is a driver for Radeon (includes the 9200 series, I think) ATI puts out called Catalyst, supposed to make everything faster. If your Radeon didn't ship with it, might be worth an update if you hve any problems. I couldn't use it, ATI doesn't offer support for lap tops. Available on ATI web site, I'd read carefully first. |

It sounds a very nice system you've got.
I've had my new system for about six months now, it uses a Radeon 9800 Pro card which performs extreemly well. My old system had an NVIDIA card which I was unhappy with. The card itself was ok but NVIDIA drivers caused me far to many problems. I've updated the drivers on the Radeon card twice now without any problems. Thanks for the feedback everybody! Looks like I might look into the 9800 in a few weeks or so. I still have to re-download Canvas, and POV and start playing to see what a P4 processor can do for me. I tried to copy my 6.5.2 version to this machine, it asked for my code, then told me 6.5.2 was a charge to upgrade. I've already done that so I'm thinking I might as well just download the beta 2 6.6, and 3.6 of POV. Thanks again for the info everybody..... ( having more trouble figuring out XP than with anything else!
