[quote author=Amabilis Support link=board=3DCanvasProGeneral;num=1043394800;start=15#18 date=01/31/03 at 19:08:52]I've made some progress on the memory leak in 6.0. There is still more to be done though. XP seems to be fairly tolerant of this memory problem, but it looks as though this problem is causing run time errors with Window 9x/Me.

I thought I could get out a fix today, but it looks like it will be more time consuming than I originally thought. I will likely be a few more days.

Hannes44,

Can you send me a model that shows the slowness of the hierarchy? I can't seem to reproduce any unusual slowness on either my 2 GHz XP system or my 200 MHz Me system. Also can you describe what I need to click on to show this. Thanks.

Mike,

It's a problem with 3DC 6, not your system. I am at this moment installing all of my development software and code onto a Windows Me system so I can determine what it is about 3D Canvas 6's smoothing that is causing 9x/Me difficulties.

TrainSmurf,

If you are scaling I would recommend right-clicking on the object and selecting "Scale->To Size" or "Scale->By Amount". (Or use the edit control of course)

Richard

just had a lengthier session with 3DC6. I'm using XP-home but clearly the memory problem is massive on this OS also. I could reproduce the slowness of the rebuild of the right window erratically. There were no certain actions that triggered it. I observed that the problem is even more extensive with the materials window.
I think most of this problem derives from the memory leak. I loaded a finished model to do some tweaking and texture work. I had the task-manager running. 3DC with the model loaded needed about 240MB memory. With  nearly every action I took 3DC acquired 10 to 14 additional MB and didn't release them and working became more and more tedious. My system has 768 MB ram and finally with using about 524MB 3DC crashed with the error 'out of memory'.
It was slow motion modelling and sometimes I saw also in slow motion how the left hand window was rebuilt. It was always triggered with selecting a face.
If you need it I can send you the file (you'd have to remind me of the correct e-mail address.

Hannes44,

Just hang on for now. If you try the patch (when it is available) and continue to have problems with the hierarchy then we can try to look into it.

And yes, the memory leak is with all versions of Windows. But, with 9x/Me it causes more crashing. XP is more tolerant of the situtation.

Richard,

my issue is not with the first time I scale anything. It's when I need to go back in the object layers and rescale the object after other layers have been added. As you know I do use the object layers extensively and rather avoid creating additional layers if I can reuse a layer for a corrective operation.

I see. You'll find the performance improved in 6.0 rev 1. that may be all that is needed. It also retains focus if you type "enter" or "tab" (in most cases).

3D Canvas 6.0 is a free upgrade for those who purchased 3D Canvas after June 17th, 2002. If you purchased before that date you can upgrade here: https://www.swreg.org/cgi-bin/currency-selector2.cgi?s=3389&p=33891003&v=0&d=0&q=1&t=&currency=USD

But of course 5.7a will continue to work and there is no need to upgrade unless there is something in 3D Canvas 6 that you feel is worthy of the $34.95 upgrade charge.
