I had a crash once when going back from 6650 to 6510.
I solved the problem this way:
1) I removed some DirectX options (such as Adaptative AA). Likely an unnecessary step.
2) I opened 3DC then I choosed the Tools menu: Select rendering mode / Smooth

... and it worked again.
