Hi All,

A beta (pre-release) version of 3D Canvas 7.1.1.3 is now available for download: Download 3D Canvas 7.1.1.3 Beta 1

Since this was released there have been a few updates. In order to try this beta you will also need to download this:

3D Canvas 7.1.1.3 Beta 3 Updates

This includes an updated 3D Canvas executable and Material operation. After installing 3D Canvas 7.1.1.3 Beta 1, you will need to copy the contents of this compressed folder to "Program Files\3D Canvas 7". If asked to replace folders or files, say "yes".

And, if you have Windows Vista, you will need to "register" the Material operation with Vista:

1) Right-click on "Command Prompt" on the Start menu's "Accessories" and chooose "Run as Administrator".
2) Type: Regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\3D Canvas 7\Operations\Material.dll"

This beta release has quite a few fixes for the Rail Simulator export and the Train Simulator Wizard.

This also is the first phase in upgrading 3D Canvas from DirectX 8 to DirectX 9. The process is not complete, but there were literally hundreds of changes made. I have tested this version to some extent, but the changes made have affected many areas. That's why this is a beta (pre-release) version. There are certainly many new bugs in this version. The nature of the changes guarantees it. But, the nature of the changes also means that fixes should be relatively easy and quick to make.

A reminder that 3D Canvas Pro users need to enable the Trainworks functions via Toos -> Options -> Misc.

Darn... looks like I missed something significant. Maybe a file is missing from the install. It's going to take a bit of fiddling to fix, I think. Fortunately, there's enough in the log to point me in the right direction.

I'd recommend that nobody else tries this version yet.

I tested it on my Vista notebook test system and it worked fine. I was hoping it wouldn't since that makes it easier to determine the cause.

I'm off to test it on my XP desktop test system.

Works on my XP desktop test system.

Looks like it is one of those "only doesn't work on some machines" problems. They are the worst to fix of course.

I have some suspicions as to the cause. I'll have to send Paul a version with more diagnostics.

I'm setting up a Vista desktop test system to try it out on. In the mean time, I have another Vista notebook test system to try it on.

So far it works on four computers, and not on one.

Yes... I have five computers. Almost embarassing. Smile But I actually need them. Or at least that's what I tell everyone who says "five computers!". Smile

All seem correct till now.

Thanks Richard SmileSmileSmile

P.S. I am running under Windows Vista Home 64bits.

I have a failure on one of my computers, but of course it's entirely different than Paul's. I'm investigating.

Actually, I just forgot to turn on UAC on the Vista machine, so it has worked on all of my test systems. Only one more to try.

That's all five of my systems that it works on, plus two others.

Unfortunately Paul you are one of a small minority it seems. I'll have to send you a new exe with diagnostics.

deleting all the temp folder files seems to have cured the crash.

Yes, something about that folder name caused a problem. Either "Dir" or more likely "GetAttr" didn't like it. I think there must have been a hidden character in it. I've changed my code for the next release to ignore errors found during this process. That should do it.

Richard,

I get error #35601 each time I delete a Merged layer or delete an object.

Any idea what can cause this?

I don't get it when deleting an object, but there is definitely something wrong with undoing/deleting merge layers. I'll have a look.
