Hi All,

3D Canvas 6.1 is now available for download: http://www.3d-canvas.com/downloads/3DCanvas6100.zip

The full "what's new" list is available here: http://www.amabilis.com/whatsnew.htm

This is nearly identical to the Release Candidate. The only change being a small bug fix to the Chamfer operation.

All plug-ins have been recompiled for 6.1 and are available here: http://www.amabilis.com/mediadownloads.htm#Scripts

looking good so far  ;D

Now I just have to work out why my plugin/operation conversions don't work (they're almost working, it's my fault somewhere)

I think you forgot to mention the standard edit mode texturing from above in the readme list of changes (which works very nicely thankyou)

I'm sure you're going to be sending me hate mail soon  ;D

Yes, I've found another bug. There seems to be some jumping occuring when moving or rotating groups of faces in face coordinate mode. I'll email you a model that exhibits this problem.

Do you have "snap to grid" on?

Please don't insult my intelligence Wink

No, I don't have any kind of snapping switched on - it only happens under certain conditions. Believe me, I'm a seasoned expert at finding bugs in 3D Canvas ;D

A way to reproduce this:

1) Create cylinder
2) Select the top face
3) Use the tip operation
4) Make sure you are in face coordinates mode
5) Try moving or rotating the selected faces

Here's another.

If you use the deform tool on an object with smoothing turned on you get an unrecoverable error #9.

I'm going to run and hide now before Richard comes after me with a large knife Wink

Timo,

That was a good idea. I often get that complaint from new users. Ken is the expert on finding bugs and actually reporting them.

Paul,

I don't list every enhancement. The little ones don't seem mentioning. Though, that particular one is pretty handy.

Ken,

I'm happy to see that you are finding the bugs. I knew they were there. I just couldn't find them. I think that face bug has been around for ever. It happens infrequently (for me at least) and only in face mode. The deform bug is probably newer.

All,

The problem with alphas/betas is that people are often scared to try them. I get VERY few people trying the alphas/betas. As a result bugs slip through to the final release. Fortunately in this case the release still hasn't been publicised so few people have been affected.

I should be republishing 6.1 shortly.

Actually, it's not just being scared of alphas or betas. Those of us using 3DC professionally can't really afford to uninstall a stable build just to test the latest and greatest feature-improved version...

Most of the enhancements look incredibly useful, but at the moment I'm busy with a couple projects and having a stable build of 3DC is more important than keeping the featureset up to date.

Mel,

I completely understand. The thing is that if the beta isn't tried by a lot of people the bugs won't be found and then the people who didn't want to try a beta because it will be buggy end up with something buggy anyhow. Which is worse for me since when it is actually released there are "too many" people finding bugs.

And of course I test the areas that I believe are affected, but can't think of everything. Overall, I think my betas/alphas are generally pretty stable.

Paul,

I forgot... you can send me anything you are having problems with. Odds are it is just something undocumented. The sample operation provided is very specific (operation contol based) since that is the class of operations that I would most like people to write since they are the easiest and in many ways hold the most potential.

Also, you do remember that operations can only operate on individual objects right? Not hierarchies, not multiple objects, not groups/lights etc. If you are applying something to a hierarchy 3DC deals with the details.

I've republished version 6.1. I think only a few people have downloaded it so far so I don't think this will affect many.

You can download the republished version here: http://www.3d-canvas.com/downloads/3DCanvas6100.zip

If you download the republished version you'll need to download the upgrade from the help menu also.

I think that the bugs I fixed have been in 3DC for many releases.

getting there slowly - I have my double side plugin working as an operation, but having a few probs with the face split which creates a new group and a new object.

Still early days at the moment will contact you tomorrow if I can't get it going.

FaceSplit can't be an operation if it creates groups and objects. Operations are reapplied frequently so if your operation did create a group and another object you would end up with new objects and groups constantly!
Operations are transactions on individual objects.

Whenever you see them working on multiple objects it is the result of trickery on my part within 3DC.

Unless... I suppose you could make it a destructive operaton (they aren't reapplied routinely) and only if they disabled it and re-enabled it would a new object/group be created. But, I don't know if 3DC would be aware of the group/object and save them.

I'm really going to have to document this!

Well, isn't that just special...I downloaded and installed the 6.1 release, and now it claims my license key is invalid.

I sent you an updated license key a while back. But it bounced and I didn't know how to contact you. Can you update your email address for me?

The email address in my profile is the current primary email contact for me. If that still bounces, you can try melebbles@ebblesminiatures.com

Though the 6.1 version enhancments are indeed needed by me for what I do in Train-Sim, I still have the need to wait this out a little longer. I am currently using 6.0.4 (??) and all is working fine. Not ready to upgrade just quite yet. Looks to be a few minor bugs perhaps? I have every confidence in Richard's ability to get things up to snuff very soon, so a few more days or so will not matter. The version I have now is meeting my needs. But...I am looking forward to the new "goodies" because I really do need them as many others will too.

Keep up the good work Richard.
