I have decided to do a tutorial on making an object look like glass. I've never done a tut before, so I hope you can under stand it Smile
I will not be using the pre-set glass textures in PovRay, instead I'll be trying to make my own. It took me a good while to do this tut. Hope its understandable.

... here is the first steps to get the shape of let's say a wine glass. This is just a rough, I will be tidying things up. I Start from the middle and worked to the right. The start and finish points must be in 0.0 position on the x axis, so there will be no gaps or holes in the model

...next I tidied up the rim of the wine glass.
This is to create the rounded rim you would normaly see on a wine glass. These points have been placed very close together.

the first point is blue, which gives a hard edge. The second above that is white, this gives a more rounde edge. The next one is white and the one below this is blue, as you can see. Be sure not to place them too close to each other. If you hover over the points you will see
them high-lighted to check there positions.

next then is the rest of the top of the glass
to the top of the stem. These points are also placed close together. The last point is blue, to give a bit of an edge going into the stem.

... here I shaped the stem and bottom of the glass. IF you notice on the last post, I changed
the detail/smoothing level of the model by sliding from 5 to 10 on the bar just below the two viewing panes, to better judge the final look of the object. Smile

... completed. You can tweek these points to your own inclination. Smile Adding more points by shift-left clicking on a point and deleting them by control(Ctrl)-left clicking on a point.
YOu then can close this window and click yes to save the work.

Now I draged another lathe object into the main scene.

In the First pictuer; I shaped a rough of the bottle, starting in the middle working to the right, placing the start and end points at 0.0 on x axis.

In the Second picture; I added another point by shift-left clicking on the 4th point on the top of the bottle. Now there is 3 points in a colomn. By shif-clicking the middle point another point will be added, which you can see in the 3rd picture... Keep a close eye on the color of the point, these can make the object look very different, sharpening and smoothing/having less or more face on the object being created.

In the 4th picture; I clicked on the bottom blue point to create another point along the neck of the bottle

The slider is now set to 10 on the slide-bar.

In the 1st picture; I moved the added point, along the neck of the bottle, to just under the last point at the mouth of the bottle.

In the 2nd picture; I changed the color of some of the points and moved them to get the shape I wanted. Some of these points are very close to each other, so you must be careful not to have them too close to each other.

... next I moved the points around to make the wall(thickness) of the glass a bit thinner.

In the 2nd picture; I added another point by shift-clicking on the green point and moving it closer to the point on the corner, changing the one beside this to a white point, for a nice curve. Aswell as this I made the thickness of the glass fairly thin. Smile When happy with shape close window and save.

Now in the main scene viewing pane there's a model of a wine glass and a bottle.
Next the texturing...

click on the pov properties button on the material palette. This brings up Raytracing Attributes

slide Reflction to level 2.
In Specular Refinements set Roughness to 1.
Then click OK

Set the Specular to 55
Set the Translucent to 95
select the Fill Tool on the Edit Toolbar on the right. Change the color to light grey for the wine glass and a nice green color for the bottle.
After painting both objects you should have something that looks like picture 1
And rendered in pov like in picture 2

Now to give the object the same kind of prorties real class would have.
Right-click on the wine glass and the bottle and enter properties. Move the Index of Refraction slider to 6 (you can set this to your prefered settings) then click OK

Now, just place cube into the scene and scale it

in x 10
in y 7
in z 10

... next invert the cube. This will give the glass and bottle something to reflect.

Here I changed the directions of the directional lights, to brighten up some of the surrounding.

I then double-clicked on the bottle and that brought up the Lathe Object Building Tool, where I created the bottle first.

Added two more points between the bottom and middle, then added another two from the middle and the neck of the bottle.

And here is the final Image Big Grin
The best thing about this method is that you can also place a bump-map on your model Cool
Well that's it. I hope that I have explained all this well enough.
If you spot anything wrong please let me know Smile
If there is anything else someone could add to this, please feel free to do so. Smile

James.
