If you extrude a face of an auto smoothed model only slightly (0.01) then you will get a sharp (smoothed) edge. This can lead to some interesting effects...
These three objects are a basic cube with auto smoothing turned on. Notice how you can still get a "sharp" edge by using a very small extrusion.....
