I was trying to get a second smooth on my model and 3DC would always crash right in the middle of the operation.
So, what I did was to export the model to directx(.X) format with just the one smooth operation performed, then import the .X file back into 3DC and did the second smooth with no problems(then saved again as .3DC file). Don't know how or why it worked better this way, but it might be usefull info if it ever happens to you.

Hmmm, Les.  Some of us (me!) also have problems with 3DC crashing when we try to perform other operations on certain objects (merge, undo merge, etc.)  I'll try this and see if it helps.  Thanks!

Troub,
I've had those problems too, but haven't done any merging with that particular model, so no real way for me to test on it. You never know though, could be a good workaround for a few different problems.

I have noticed that at times(not always), 3DC doesnt like a lot of "undo's" of any kind, so I've gotten into the habit of just doing a couple of operations at a time and then saving. It seems to work better.

Another thing that helps is to compact your object often, when you are sure you won't need to undo.

Ah, yeah.  But I'm never sure I won't need to undo.  I guess that's why I end up with about 100 different .3dc files for each model (backup, backup, backup!!).  I'm a little obsessive  ;D

Zelag,
I'm the same way too. I like to compact, but I never use that until I'm certain about the semi-finished model.

I like this thread (well... except the first part about having to export). It means that some people actually do appreciate the value of Layers. Smile

Note that exporting and importing will result in the loss of the "Diffuse" information for the model's material since the DirectX file format doesn't support it.
