When are the _nmc textures being used?

I think this may be used when different detail levels are set when running RailWorks.

I had sent an upload to uktrainsim that most had no problem with, but one person got the missing texture message on their model. I found out they were running at a lower detail setting. Found I could get the same error on my machine, by lowering detail level in the sim. Adding nmc files back in seemed to solve it, so that’s my best explanation. Doesn’t explain why your friend with the higher spec computer gets it, unless he has accidentally set RW to run in a lower detail level.

Colleagues,

I stumbled across another mysterious (well, to me at least) thing.

I have been using bump maps on a model, named ‘maintexture_nm.tgpcdx’. The asset editor created both an _nm as well as the compressed _nmc versions when exporting the ACE file, but after inspection with RW-tools the GeoPcDx file only calls for the _nm version.

So I deleted the _nmc file — which had NO effect on the appearence of the model in the game!

However, another user, running a much better PC than I have, did the same and ended up getting the ‘missing texture’ displayed instead of the bump map, which he could fix by adding the _nmc file.

So, my question is simply… what on earth is going on? I already figured that the _nmc version is actually in use. But when and why? (And why not on my PC?)

Thanks for any advise you may give me.

Cheers!
Michael
