Very simple advice needed…

I’m not sure how to help with the hierarchy. I think I have it documented properly now. And I believe it works properly.

If you are getting crashes with no error message, then odds are it is a driver/windows bug.

Richard

Hi,

this is a bit embarrassing question andnbsp; <!– s;) –><!– s;) –>, because the
problem is so basic. However, when you have quit
laughing, could someone tell me how one should
copy a hierarchy?

I mean very exact step by step instructions.

I have succesfully done it many times, but it suspect
I’m doing something incorrectly, because now and
then either a) 3DC crashes to desktop (not
necessarily repeatably) or b) the results are quite
different what I expected.

The problems seem to be more usual with bigger
hierarchies.

One thing which confuses is that often root object
cannot be copied, I assume that the selection must
be done using a direct child and andquot;select hierarchyandquot;.

I’d like to learn this properly and prevent crashes
(by the way, 3DC’s recovery routine is
wonderful, I’ve never lost a model…)

Excellent, Richard! andnbsp;;D

5.5c rev 3 solved the problem. andnbsp;;D andnbsp;I should download
new versions ASAP, I know… But downloading from
home with 56k modem takes soo loonngggg…

I have a lot faster connection at workplace, but the
Pro extension can’t be downloaded without registered
3DC Pro and I’m NOT going to install 3DC
to my work machine! Would it be possible to have
alternate URL for LP/PRO download in future?

Markku

I believe this was fixed in 3DC 5.5c rev 3.

Richard

Hi, again,

Richard:
I tested again and here are the results:

An Unrecoverable error has occurred. If you continue
to receive this message please contact Amabilis at
<!– e –>support@amabilis.com<!– e –> (#91)

I tried to copy a model. I have sent the model to
above e-mail address.

Alan:
Thanks, this clarifies a lot…

Markku

I click away from everything so nothing is selected – this way I can be sure it goes into andquot;rootandquot; and I can alway move it from there later <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

Normally I would NOT recommend downloading a new version unless you need what is in the new version or are having a problem.

I remember the days of 56k just like it was 6 months ago (It was). If you think downloading 20MBs is bad, try uploading it! Way harder.

I’d rather not have a andquot;proandquot; download area since these things tend to be linked to by the whole of the ‘net and I have to pay everytime an updated is downloaded.

Richard

Hi,

Richard:
I know you have explained a lot in tutorials… I
think you are doing fine job there and in support.
But you might have lost the novice attitude. You
can’t claim to be a novice in 3DC, can you?
;D andnbsp;;D andnbsp;;D

Alan:
Thanks, this confirmed what I believed: you do not
actually select topmost GROUP, but topmost OBJECT.
Also, I’m not completely sure what should be selected
when you give copy command? I suppose you mean
that it does not matter, that the copy will appear in
root of the scene. Anyway, it’s not that I’m impatient
here, the problems have manifested themselves with
very clear signals that waiting will not help… And sure,
Win98SE can be one cause of problems.

Anyway, this eliminates the possibility that I’m working
completely incorrectly. Now I can be irritated with good
consciousness when something ugly happens! andnbsp;;D andnbsp; ;D ;D

Thanks a lot,
Markku

Awww,

sorry, in previous mail, it should read

andquot; Also, I’m not completely sure what should be selected
when you give PASTE command?andquot;

I’m really making fool of myself here andnbsp;:D .

Markku

This is as I understand it (assuming this is what you want <!– s:) –><!– s:) –> )

To select a group of object andnbsp;you ctrl+alt left click on the topmost object in the group that you want.

For example in my pic if you wanted to select all the objects you would ctrl+alt left click on the ‘whiteCube’.

If you only wanted the group with the pinkCube and the blueCube you would ctrl+alt left click the pinkCube.

Easy up to now ?

To copy the selected group all you have to do is go to edit/copy or ctrl+c. This can involve copying a lot of information to the clipboard – so give your system a few seconds to think about it…. We all know how stable windows is when you ask it to do too much …. <!– s:P –><!– s:P –>

Edit/paste (ctrl+v) to paste the copy

I could be wrong …..
