Paul,
I was playing with some letters and a cube yesterday afternoon, and didn’t have much success with engraving(boolean subtraction). The main problem being that the letters have so many faces/edges/points, that I found it next to impossible to locate them all for merging, or welding. Even with Optimising, Solidifying, and Triangulating several times I could not get the letters to be a true solid object, and this caused some really nasty artifacts in the cube when doing a boolean subtraction… <!– s:( –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_sad.gif" alt="" title="Sad" /><!– s:( –>
Someone else on the forums here may know a better way of doing this, but I believe the decal idea may be your best bet. I like a good challenge, so I’ll keep playing with it, time permitting…..
By the way, that’s an excellent trophy…

I was hoping to use a bump map to make it look like the trophy was inscribed but it didn’t work out. Maybe next time.

I’ve just read David Bollinger’s tutorial – seems fairly straightforward.
I will try what you suggest, thanks for you help.

Paul,
David Bollinger wrote the tutorial about applying andquot;decalsandquot; in PovRay(Mini-Tutorials and User’s Tips section)
Could you create your andquot;decalandquot; as a transparent texture with only the words or letters visible, and a bumpmap applied to them?

Hi Paul,
I was thinking of an actual engraving, but it seems it might be a real pain. Multiple letters froze up the booleen subtraction, and single letters might take a lot of time. Just a thought.

As you can see I started to get somewhere with bump maps.
I dont know why but the bump doesn’t show up when you apply it using ‘apply material’ from object operations (left hand cube). Seems to work, sort of, if you apply the bump map by using ‘paint tool’ or ‘fill tool’ from the edit toolbar.
This is a bit of a pain because it would be useful to apply the bump map to just a selected area.
Any 3DC experts out there explain this?
