The return of the monthly challenge ?

Typically (at the moment) for MS train sim, about 4000 to 8000 polys ([b:3m125hc4]Note[/b:3m125hc4] this is [b:3m125hc4]triangles[/b:3m125hc4], not faces) is reasonable for the main model, other scenery items such as buildings need to be as low as possibly (10-100)

Flight sims can probably go higher as there is less scenery around.

I may have a go at this one (and not with a train)

It may be an idea to restrict the poly count slightly as PC’s these days are that much more powerful and it won’t be long before we get games with 30000+ poly models all over the place.

Hey I’ve always thought this was a great idea. It gives you the chance to view several other peoples work and get new and possibly better ideas of your own at the same time.

i like the idea but why video game oriented?

Instead of saying video game oriented, why not just have a low-poly category and a high-poly category. I’m not real sure what exactly is considered a low-poly count but I’m sure someone could suggest some reasonable limits <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –> Just a thought.

The reason I thought of ‘video game/low poly’ was that the models could make a set that could then be used to show what 3dc can do…then next month we could do another subject (I was thinking of ‘cameras’ ??).
Also games can just about be anything from a wooden shield to the Death Star….
Let’s stick to this subject this month and we can work out a better topic for next month, ok?

I will start a post off in the model feedback for wips, etc.

oh, and games could also include train sims, flight sims, etc….

Couple questions.. Are we going to decide on an absolute max face/point count? Also, will we be choosing a category (shooter, space sim, etc) for each challenge or is it just any game?

Just curious,
Rob

As far as I am concerned any thing that could be placed into a game will be ok – any type of game.
As for face count, er …. don’t know

The only thing I can think of is
a/ post a wire frame
b/ post the face count

this will allow others to say things like
a/ ‘You could add more faces here to bring out the detail…’ or ‘If you remove this edge here it would….. etc’ ?
b/ ‘5000 polys for a sword might be a bit high’ or ‘How did you make that in only 500 faces ?’

Open to ideas – no rules are set in stone and it only for fun
