Smooth/Flat shaded textures

Thanks Richard, I’ll give it a try.

Hi Richard,
Sorry about the post in the wrong section.

What I meant was, in Gile I can set the TEXTURE not the object to be flat or smooth shaded.
On a single mesh, say a wheel, I can set the texture on the outer rim and flange to be smooth shaded and the texture for the spokes to be flat shaded. <!– s:D –><!– s:D –>

Just wondered if the same thing may be possible with 3DC in the future.

I don’t really understand the difference. It isn’t something I am familiar with. I don’t think Direct3D has anything similar but I could be wrong. Now that you have put the seed in my head I will keep a look out for it.

So how do they look different? And how is this different than making the model smooth shaded on the outer rim and flange, and the spokes flat shaded in 3DC.

Richard

Maybe it’s me thats missing something here. I didn’t know I could make certain areas flat or smooth shaded on a single mesh in 3DC. I’ll take a look.
To explain further, if you take a look at my ‘EVEN MORE STEAM’ post in the Model Feedback section. I made a real ‘pigs ear’ of exporting this from Ultimate Unwrap and anded up with everything above the wheels as a single mesh!!

However I was able to use Gile to select each texture and set it to be either smooth or flat shaded.
If I set a texture to smooth shading, any faces it is applied to will be smooth shaded .

Can I do this in 3DC? Have I been missing this feature for the past three years!! <!– s:oops: –><!– s:oops: –>

You can use the crease operation on groups of faces/points etc. It takes a bit of getting used to because creasing one point affects all of the faces surrounding but you can do a lot of individual creasing on a single object.

Have a look at this:

Notice the crease that runs around the ‘hood’ of the train. That is one piece with selective creasing.
